Leatherman Just Got Serviced
SANFORD’S SPOKESMAN PUTS “LITTLE DIGGER” IN HIS PLACE
FITSNews – August 25, 2008 – We rarely give it up for gubernatorial spokesman Joel Sawyer, but today he popped South Carolina’s most powerful politician (and resident “Godfather of Pork“) squarely in the balls.
Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman – the lawmaker most responsible for the spending orgy that has crippled South Carolina’s budget – today attempted to blame the state’s financial mess on the governor. He also tried to further distance himself from the consequences of his own wasteful spending by suggesting that governor submit targeted budget cuts to the General Ass-embly – which continues to dodge its responsibility by cutting front-line agencies in an effort to bully taxpayers into accepting tax and fee increases.
Anyway, here’s what Sawyer fired off to SC Hotline in response to Leatherman’s suggestion that Sanford tell lawmakers what he thinks should be cut:
“Yeah…they’re called budget vetoes. Maybe the Senator’s memory is fuzzy, but I’m pretty sure he voted against every one of them.â€
Nice … it sure looks like the governor’s office isn’t going to let Leatherman cleverly outposition them on the spending issue the same way he cleverly outpositioned House Speaker Bobby Harrell earlier this year.

Where’s the to-scale bust of Lenin on Hugh’s desk? Did he get rid of it after you outed him last year?

Joel’s a bright guy with a good sense of humor. I remember working with him and liked him. He was a self-described liberal back then (yeah, back when he was part of the much-maligned “MSM”)
That was just before he got the job offer with the governor. I guess he saw the light.
It was well before he slammed Time magazine’s ranking of governors (Mark Sanford was near the bottom) as predictable from the “liberal media.”
In any case, I hope Joel has a successful career in political communications. He’s a good fellow.

Why are the powers that be in the General Assembly (and their willing accomplices in the MSM) referring to the budget cuts as “Mid-year”?? These folks are so math-challenged that their “mid-year” budget cuts now arrive just 2 months into the State’s fiscal year.
Hugh, you doddering old fart, these are BEGINNING of the year cuts, we’re not even through the second freakin’ month yet!

I sure wish that someone in Florence County would grow a set and work on replacing YOU!

Wow, you right-wing folks are stirred up about this Leatherman fellow.
You’ve got someone hunting RINO’s, someone calling him a “bitch,” someone talking about communism, someone calling describing the man in terms of flatulence AND using Rush Limbaugh terminology (if you’d only called them the “drive-by media”).

but why won’t they outline 200 million in cuts?

Don’t forget my advice, Baker-man. About what to do with his head.

How tellingg is it that the only defender of Leatherman is a left-winger (baker)? Why, I bet baker’s eyes teared up when Kennedy was rolled out (no pun intended) in Denver.
Did anyone but me think how inappropriate it was for the beginning scene of the Kennedy tribute to show water lapping at the edge? I could almost see the top of the car in the shallows!

Where did I defend Mr. Leatherman? Did I say one thing in his favor? Just noting the intensity of the comments here.
And I’m a “left-winger”?
By James on August 26th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
And I’m a right-winger for bringing up the math-challenged wording the gool ol’ boys like to use to hide their incompetance?
The budget should have been declared unconstituitonal – now we’re already getting a “mid-year” cut – I hate to break it to you all, but this installment is only the first of a few “mid-year” cuts to come.
My apologies to all the doddering old farts that I offended by lumping Hugh in with them – at least those folks know how to balance a checkbook.

No, James. My assessment of right-wing-ness was tied to the Rush Limbaugh lingo about the media.
I do not claim to be an expert of the legislative abilities of Hugh Leatherman, and I would not describe myself as a major fan of the SC General Assembly, in general.

Just like a da*n politician to try to blame someone else. If he’d take the governor’s advice and make cuts where needed, instead of across the board, we might be able to begin to get a grip on some of this spending. But, no, as I understand it, the people that are supposed to represent us can’t be bothered with coming back to Columbia to do their job.
