COUNCIL SHOVEFEST LATEST IN ONGOING SAGA

FITSNews – August 18, 2008 – Not that we particularly give a rip what happens to a bunch of Bible-thumpin’ Clempsun season ticket holders, but has anybody else noticed that government up in Greenville, S.C. has basically imploded over the last few weeks?

Seriously, a County Council meeting almost turned into a cage match today, with one council member threatening to file an incident report after another council member allegedly shoved him:

A meeting of the Greenville County Council committee formed to monitor investigations of Councilman Tony Trout adjourned today after Trout physically pushed his way into the conference room and refused to leave for the committee’s executive session.

At least five sheriff’s deputies assembled in a lobby outside the conference room as the stalemate dragged on, but committee Chairman Butch Kirven said he ultimately decided not to have Trout removed from the room because it wouldn’t have served “any useful purpose.”

Councilman Fred Payne told GreenvilleOnline.com afterward that he may file an incident report against Trout for an episode in which Councilman Bob Taylor began to close the conference room door as Payne and Trout were entering the room.

Trout pushed his way through as Payne tried to enter the room, with some inaudible words exchanged. Trout later said he told Payne and Taylor that they were “way too small to try something like that.”

Five sheriff’s deputies? Jeez. We can certainly see something like this happening in Anderson County, but Greenville? The cultural center of the Upstate?

Anyway, it’s always nice to see tax dollars hard at work at the local level …

This incident, which has been resolved, occurred in Greenville County Council chambers, NOT the government of the City of Greenville. Regardless of how negatively this story was written (obviously by another out of touch Columbia resident), it is not indicative of how government typically operates in Greenville County. Despite not having the state government in their bedrooms (unlike Columbia leaders), Greenville’s leaders are always working to develop and fulfill visions for successful corporate business and lifestyle enhancement for local citizens and international visitors.
