LEGENDARY POLITICAL CONSULTANT VOWS TO FIGHT ON

FITSNews - August 5, 2008 - Rod Shealy - the rough and tumble, Hawaiian-shirt wearing political consultant considered by many to be the sole inheritor of the late Lee Atwater’s legacy - has been diagnosed with the same condition that felled his legendary predecessor seventeen years ago, a cancerous brain tumor.

Two days ago, our sources learned that Shealy was facing what they termed a “serious medical challenge.” When confronted with this information, Shealy confirmed the story, but indicated that his plan was to break the news in his own chain of newspapers this week. FITSNews agreed to delay our story until his version was ready for publishing.

Here’s an excerpt from Shealy’s column, which will appear in this afternoon’s edition of his chain of newspapers:

As a political consultant and a newspaper publisher, I’m familiar with “spin”… but there’s not really much way to spin this:

A few days ago, tests revealed I have a cancerous brain tumor.

FITSNews is endeavoring to speak with Shealy’s doctors, and we’ll obviously be following up on this story with new information throughout the day. In the meantime, we hope you’ll join us in keeping Rod and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rod is an amazing man that has been a true friend for 34 years. Those that only know him through the political prism of newsprint or the blogs do not know the true Rod Shealy.

He has overcome every obstacle presented to him in his life, and I believe he will do so again.

Rod, you are in my prayers, constantly.

He certainly has enjoyed life and made politics in this state interesting, regardless of whether you agree with him or his candidates. I hope he’ll be enjoying life for a very, very long time.

Surgery is scheduled. I’ll try to keep folks updated on my blog and via e-mail, but I imagine Rod will be trying to do the same thing. After meeting with specialist today, he is VERY upbeat and optimistic - and working on those campaigns.
