Gamecock Football Is Profitable?

GO FIGURE …

FITSNews - August 4, 2008 - With the onset of another disappointing season of South Carolina football just weeks away, we were somewhat surprised to learn how much the Gamecocks are still cleaning up at the cash register. According to the Columbia Business Journal, the program that can’t win for losing is projecting profits of $33 million this season, which would make it the 19th-wealthiest publicly-traded company in the state if it sold shares.

From CBJ:

The program’s projected revenues this year of more than $47 million would have made Gamecock football the state’s 19th-largest publicly traded company last year, according to calculations by cbj based on USC athletic department budget data.

And in a period lasting a little longer than a typical quarter for a publicly traded company, the team is forecast to post profits of more than $35 million.

That’s more than what S.C.-based restaurant chain Denny’s netted all of last year.

And that’s good for USC athletes because money made from USC’s football program (and to a lesser extent its men’s basketball program) helps pay the expenses for the other 17 varsity sports — none of which make money, said John Humphries, budget director for USC’s athletic department.

Now if the Shamecocks can keep enough players out of jail long enough to beat friggin’ Vanderbilt, they’ll really be in business.

Oh well, at least the visual relief at the stadium is still strong.

I guess a sucker is really born every minute…or somehow maybe because of USC admission policies we have a disproportional to population amount of suckers that have settled in the area.

Whenever I encounter a die-hard Carolina fan I always ask when he graduated. 90% of the time the answer I didn’t go to USC.

To be fair many of the IPTAY folks have no academic connection with the Clemson University.

As someone who was born in Columbia and was graduated from Clemson University I get sick of all local media’s love with USC and the Gamecocks. It is sooo over the top and just slightly more annoying than when people talk about ‘the lake’ meaning Lame Murray when there are hundreds of lakes in the area.

‘The Game’ is at Death Valley. Carolina is in Chapel Hill. USC is in California.

Dear #1
You’re gay, you went to Clempson, and your mother STILL dresses you funny. USC does require that it’s male applicants have a pair hangin’. Lacking a set of balls is cause for admission to Clempson as well as a bastard birth. Quit hatin’ on the Cocks, which should come natural to you. Come over to the light dumbass.
OK in other news, it seems that the Ga Bulldogs are trying to hedge in on the Gamecock record of arrested/ suspended players. Yea riiight!
But check this out

Old Bike Dude,

Fess up. Everyone knows who you are. You finished high school and went to that first year at MTC that Grandpa paid for until you got a low skilled industrial job. After a weak marriage and now divorce that produced another member of a generation doing less well than your parents… You now have a kid at the best little university in 5 points.

It’s okay to be a proud daddy but don’t hitch any dreams to The USC football programme. Their success and failure doesn’t mean you have power or dispair. You can put that light beer down now.
