PROTESTING REPUBLICANS LEFT IN THE LURCH

FITSNews - August 4, 2008 - Congressional Republicans hoping to take advantage of a rare symbolic victory got left in the lurch today by President George W. Bush, who said he wouldn’t call lawmakers back to Washington D.C. this month to deal with gas prices.

Many Republicans - including South Carolina’s Gresham Barrett - were back in Washington today to protest the fact that Democrats went on vacation without passing a new energy bill. But Bush (who is headed to China for the Olympics) left them hanging. Here’s a particularly nice dig on the situation from Raw Story:

The president’s unwillingness to subject lawmakers to Washington’s infamous August heat and humidity in an ostensible bid to lower prices at the pump stands in stark contrast to his outright demand last year that Congress not be allowed to adjourn for recess until it passed a law expanding the government’s domestic spying authority. Apparently, in the Bush White House, warrantless wiretaps trump preventing $5-a-gallon gas.

Ouch … of course the good news is that gas prices are falling - at least a little bit. The bad news? Our government is still able to spy on us …

Is this guy asleep at the switch or what? How lame do you have to be when you are a lame duck?

For our national security interest, for his political party’s political interest, and, to finally demonstrate some leadership he should call this sham congress run by a crypto-stalinist latte liberal in the house back into session. Booo Bush

Did you consider that the Congressional Republicans did not want Bush to really do it and the request was perfunctory? This story needs to be about Congressional Republicans, not Bush. If he dragged the Dems back the press would frame this story as Bush vs. Pelosi, which would just feed into Obama’s “3rd Bush Term” meme.

Lame ass president! WTF is he good for? No wonder we end up with the bums we get in office. He pisses on the base conservatives every chance he gets.

Call ‘em back and Pelosi et al are in front of the cameras and mikes when they aren’t stalling and hem hawing on the floor. The preferable route is 5 weeks of Dems not responding to the demands of The People. That is if R’s want to win anything. They don’t usually seem to want to– the President is exactly right here.

By the way, $5. gallon gas??? I paid $3.53 Saturday and crude plunged below $120/bbl today from a high of over $147.
