Lovelace To Mount Independent Gubernatorial Bid
NEWBERRY PHYSICIAN GEARING UP FOR 2010 RUN
FITSNews – July 23, 2008 – Newberry physician Oscar Lovelace – who pulled 35% of the Republican primary vote away from incumbent Gov. Mark Sanford two years ago – will run for the state’s top political post in 2010 as an independent, sources tell FITSNews.
Word of Lovelace’s interest in making a second gubernatorial bid start leaking out back in May, with the website Palmetto Scoop first reporting on it here.
Since that time, Lovelace has made his intentions known to several key financial supporters in the medical community and been advised by his consultant Rod Shealy to run as an independent, not as a Republican.
Obviously, such a candidacy would mean that Shealy’s top client, Lt. Gov. André Bauer, is either not running for governor or has parted ways with his longtime advisor. It could also create a distinct electoral advantage for whoever inherits the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
So far, Attorney General Henry McMaster and U.S. Congressman Gresham Barrett are generally regarded as the leading Republican candidates for governor in 2010, although the names of Lt. Gov. Bauer, former House Speaker David Wilkins, House Majority Leader Jimmy Merrill, former Sanford Chief-of-Staff Tom Davis, State Rep. Nikki Haley and several others have all been floated as potential candidates.
House Speaker Bobby Harrell – once a leading candidate – has already announced that he will not run for governor in 2010, and State Sen. Jim Ritchie – another former gubernatorial aspirant – is out of the picture after being defeated in his Republican Senate primary last month.
On the Democratic side, the field is a bit more established.
Based on their active primary engagement on behalf of Republican and Democratic candidates, it’s clear that current education superintendent Jim Rex and his predecessor Inez Tenenbaum are both actively running already, although they may have to hold off a well-financed challenge from Upstate PR executive and former Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin.
State Sen. Joel Lourie’s name is also frequently mentioned on the Democratic side, as is former House Minority Leader James Smith.
Incidentally, we’ll soon be discussing some surprising numbers we just received that will no doubt have an impact on how all of these prospective candidates – and Lovelace – might fare in their upcoming campaigns.
Stay tuned to FITSNews for that report …

About the only person that’s floated Nikki Haley and Tom Davis’ name is you, on this post. Nice try, though. Got to keep the money coming in.

AMS,
Thank you for once again commenting exclusively on who you would and wouldn’t “do.”
From your many previous comments, it appears that if someone is female and has a pulse you would “do” them, but males and animals, you would “not do.”
Good to know.

Lovelace won’t stand a chance as an Independent… Bad move Shealy.

Lovelace has a lot going. He has the look and is very personable. He comes across as sincere. He appears comfortable in front of any audience. Andre should never be underestimated as we all know. It will be very interesting to see what transpires. Personally, I would rather see Lourie and Smith in 2010 than Inez and another wealthy Democrat running state wide.

Wait, I don’t get this…here’s a great story about the bad guy from Wild Wild West running for governor, but some anglican missionary wants to talk about …is it Nikky Sixx or Sir Edmund Haley? Is that what is going on here? And are Senator Nikki and Rep Nikki the same person? If so, are they a boy or a girl, and would AMS do one or both or neither?
This is very confusing. Didn’t the Kinks write a song about this?

I’d vote for Lovelace over McMaster if their names both appeared on the ballot. McMaster’s shameless self-promotion over the past several years as AG has been over the top.

Democrats should be looking for an outsider (not Erwin) who can finance his own campaign. I’ve been told a “Pug Ravenel-ish type” is considering a run, that coming from an incoming House member.
If the guy I was told is running, he has my full support:
A) He’s from the Coast
B) He comes from a well known SC family
C) He has the funds
D) He can run as a “Columbia outsider”
E) He’s a lot more telegenic than anyone else named

?:
Is that an anonymous endorsement for an anonymous candidate?
Glad to hear you support him, though.

Andre wants Howie’s $$$- You can’t have Howie and Rod at the same time.

? for Governor — You’re obviously speaking of TRav, who may be out of the clutches of the Federal prison system by 2010. I’d expect a Dem to like a busted Elephant.

Tom Davis for govenor!!! Whoooo-hoooo!!! He is obviously really interested in serving the people of the Senate District (the won he hasn’t even won the race for yet, and isn’t even an incumbent in yet, mind you).
I don’t know too much about the fella, but I really hope he runs on his record in the Senate when he runs for govenor. What a ridiculous head in the clouds self promoter. In the true mold of his boss Sanford, look for this guy to accomplish nothing other than running for office.

God…he sure is cute.

Barrett is my man and hopefully he gets “Howie’s Money”. I think they have all been out there trying to get it. Maybe Andre’ should keep Shealy, it seems to have worked for him in the past. I am sure Rod has at least one more trick he can pull out of his hat. Although I think Lovelace is a great guy, running as an independant just isn’t going to cut it. People just don’t take you seriously but of course maybe that is Rod’s latest trick.

CPC- I doubt “?” is talking about T-Rav if this guy is running as a Democrat. Maybe, just maybe, there is a conservative Democrat out there who can shepherd these straying Republicans in on the Coast. And you’ve got to admire the fact that he didn’t give the guys name up quite yet, that’s showing some loyalty which many of you so clearly lack.
I’m fairly certain I’ve heard this candidates name being whispered around Columbia and Charleston circles… as well as in some swing counties like Colleton and Newberry.
