FITSNews “Undorsement” - Scott Talley
A WOULD-BE REFORMER GOES TO THE DARK SIDE
FITSNews - June 18, 2008 - You can practically hear the shrillness in Rep. Scott Talley’s voice these days as he bemoans the evil influence of “out-of-state money.”
Aside from telegraphing his precarious political footing, it’s another sign that Talley - as far as conservative wisdom is concerned - has officially “gone ’round the bend.” He is now one of “them,” a status quo enabler who would rather shoot convenient bullets at people trying to make change than actually join the hard work at hand. Talley’s sold out completely now, bending obediently to the will of the education and trial lawyer lobbies, both of which have donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to keep this State Senate seat in their grubby. self-serving paws.
Four years ago, we’d have never thought this transformation was possible. Back then, Talley was a “Taxpayer Hero” - someone who seemed possessed of that honest, independent streak of intellectual curiosity that so few legislators in Columbia would even recognize. He was young, attractive and appeared to be committed to real change.
We had high hopes for him.
But somewhere along the way, Talley turned. Instead of becoming a dynamic force against our state’s failed status quo, Talley joined them … and started taking their money.
Talley’s opponent - Lee Bright - is due.
He should have won this Senate seat four years ago, and would have won it had Gov. Mark Sanford gotten off his duff and campaigned for him. Well, this time around the governor is off his duff, and here’s hoping his efforts yield another conservative voice for change in the State Senate …
Talley had his chance to be a leader … and chose instead to follow the forces holding our state back.

Mark Sanford and those on his various political hit teams who follow the guv blindly may deserve Lee Bright, but don’t try to convince the rest of us that he would be good for the state. Bright is dangerously uninformed on just about every issue I have ever heard him address, and his positions are polarizing at best.
FITSNews is very entertaining, but offerings like this represent FITSNews at its worst. The assertions regarding Scott Talley as “a status quo enabler who would rather shoot convenient bullets at people trying to make change than actually join the hard work at hand” and characterizing him as a sell out “bending obediently to the will of the education and trial lawyer lobbies” are unsupported, which is not surprising since this is all untrue.
Talley may have receieved money from lawyers (he is a real estate lawyer), but he has actually supported the governor over and over again on a wide variety of issues, and is a true conservative by any reasonable measure. Talley is also a small business owner (ice cream stores) and has that perspective as well to shape his decisions. Of course, business men gave him some money, as did people who eat or have eaten ice cream, but nobody much seems to care about that. As for his views on education, Talley is a product of a very strong public school system in Spartanburg County, and the people he represents (and will represent as Senator) are strongly supportive of the system in place in the district.
It is a damn shame that a guy can get into politics, do a good job for the people he represents, finish first in the primary, and then have far flung interests in his own party try to drag him down. No wonder we don’t have more good folks running for office and the state is such a pathetic mess.
The “force holding our state back” is stupidity - as represented by your article.

“a true conservative by any reasonable measure.” “Reasonable” being the key word there and the perspective missing on this out-there wacko website.

Wow, Someone has thier panies in a wad. Does’nt suprise me to hear it though. Your Mr. Talley voted twice in March of this year to support School Choice measures, just check the House Journals. Funny he would try to pin that label on Mr. Bright, when he himself voted for the same Choice ideas. He was really trying to protect your precious schools with that vote was’nt he? Wake up !
By baker on June 18th, 2008 at 9:06 am
Yeah, it looks like Lee Bright is pretty solid with the SCRG deal. No surprise, then, that he’s Will’s favored candidate.
In a video interview with the Herald-Journal, Bright says he’d support public money going to private schools. But his answer was pretty shifty. He talked about having good schools in Spartanburg County — he was a school board member in District 6 — but said vouchers/tax credit should be used in “the lower part of the state.” Hmmmm…..is he saying those “choice” avenues wouldn’t be applied to Spartanburg? He also touted “local control” for schools. My guess is that his former District 6 colleagues wouldn’t be in favor of PPIC, so where’s he on “local control” of that issue?
Whether or not I disagree with Will Folks on a number of issues, he does seem like a guy who likes straight-shooters and straight talk. Lee Bright surely isn’t talking straight about this stuff.

Ah, Mrs. Talley, so nice of you to stop by and read FITSNews! Since when did the libertarian-conservative viewpoint become “out-there wacko”?
By Vagabond on June 18th, 2008 at 10:18 am
After all, this is the pandering clown who introduced a bill to ban lap dances. Any supposed “limited government” lawmaker who wants to waste legislative time on how we spend Saturday night while ignoring the transparency and spending caps bills deserves to be sent home…and mocked incessantly.

Talley a real estate Lawyer? Oonly in his self serving political ads in the yellow pages he is a personal injury lawyer. Commonly refered to as a Ambulance Chasing Trial Lawyer.

Better unendorse Katrina Shealy fast. Have you slept with your lawful spouse today? LOL Congrats, and I am sure it was not CA for a honeymoon.
By Mungo on June 18th, 2008 at 11:06 am
I wonder if Talley is a member of the American Trial Lawyer Associa…oops, I meant the “American Association for Justice”!
By Folks is wrong, again on June 18th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I think the real irony in this race is the fact that Trial Lawyers and Education PACs are considered to be so evil on this website but no one is talking about the special interest of the Club for Growth or the Responsible Government crowd. It is interesting that when the Governor and his out of state interests pump money in it is ok in the name of reform but people in this state in Talley’s profession are banned from giving money and demonized. Get real. Lee Bright runs a trucking company how does that make him more responsible a business man and qualified for the office than a lawyer who also owns a small business? Will, as usual I am glad to see that you are throwing out your bias rhetoric to try and make your opinion matter in a part of the state that has no real effect on you. For someone who seems to enjoy sticking it to the Governor you sure do seem to lick his nuts on candidates he supports, interesting…

Dear Gene E. Nowak:
You are a doo doo head name-caller.
Sincerely,
The other kids in your 1st grade class
By Not only that on June 18th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
ZZ — Never met the man. And there IS no “libertarian-conservative” viewpoint. There’s libertarian and there’s conservative. That’s why the Republican party is split, with your governor backing the wackos and traditional conservatives backing people with a common-sense perspective on the future.
By Gene E. Nowak on June 18th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Why is reporting the written record as formulated by your candidate name calling?
In campaign material where he is soliciting votes he is a real estate attorney. But in the yellow pages where he is soliciting business for his firm he is a personal injury lawyer. Which statement do you believe?
Most voters know that some personal injury lawyers are know as Ambulance Chasing Trial lawyers is probably why he choose to craft another title for what he does when not running for the senate or his Ice cream businesses? I’ll try to refrain from mentioning these facts until he is safely eliminated from contention.
Talking about the first grade the last time I heard someone call another doo doo head I was visiting a grade school. Was that you? I thought that was rather juvenile then also.

The reason attorneys should not be allowed in the SC senate is that the senate nominates and appoints SC judges. In other words is is a conflict of interest for an attorney to be in the senate to nominate judges they will later argue in front of. Talk about a miscarriage of justice! We need reform to make our governor have more than a figurehead position. Go Bright!

i know you are but what am i
i’m rubber your glue . . .
I’m thinking you are not well acquainted with sarcasm, though I’ll bet it is used on you frequently.
Calling Talley an ambualnce chaser because he is a perosnal injury lawyer is as legitimate as calling all doctors quacks, all cops crooked, etc. It is low-brow politics, which Lee Bright and his supporters utilize almost exclusively.
By rvspme on June 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
undorse this:
Almost as low-brow as Scott Talley saying Bright hasn’t paid his taxes. I hope someone falls down and breaks an ankle in your ice cream shops. Then you’ll know how the rest of us feel.
By Gene E. Nowak on June 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
undorse this,
Unlike you I did not call anyone an Ambulance Chasing Trial lawyer. What I said is “personal injury lawyers are commonly called Ambulance Chasing Trial lawyers”
As it apparently that hit a raw nerve at Talley central, I will refrain from speculating about Talley’s business practices.
By undorse this on June 18th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Good point, Dave. We should definitely work to be sure there are no perceived conflicts of interest regarding the legislature.
Since the legislature makes decisions that impact funding, taxation, infrastucture, insurance, ports, education, safety, etc., we should also work to make sure no heads of non-profits, business owners, contractors, insurance agents, teachers, policemen, firemen, etc., should be in the legislature as well.
Perhaps we can populate the legislature with preachers, priests, you and Lee Bright.
Watch out, world - here comes South Carolina!
By Gene E. Nowak on June 18th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
How is this for a solution? What if there were some members of the Legislature that drank their beer from cans instead of silver goblets then legislation and taxes would reflect the real world most of us live in.
By Elwood P. Suggins on June 18th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Sanford’s endorsement and $5 will get Notso Bright a venti latte from Starbucks. He is toast.
By What fits news is becoming on June 19th, 2008 at 11:31 am
There sure is a lot of fancy lawyer talk going on here. We in SC don’t take to kindly to lawyers, especially when they represent injured people (there all ambulance chasers, right!?).
I reckon I don’t want no dagumm people whose job it is to study law making laws, or people who know about laws donating money to a candidate. Only business groups who don’t know nothin about laws should be doin the donating. At least they ain’t no fancy pantsed lawyer, with hippy loving codes of ethics.
Fits news is losing credibility by the minute.

Dear Gene E Nowak,
The above blog entry is what’s known as sacasm. Put another way so you can more easily understand, Undorse This makes good points while you are clearly ignorant (you too Dave).
By Stroker Ace on June 19th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Gene Nowak sure is busy….you only were on SHJ 100 times the other day saying that Talley got into to the ice cream business to help his Senate chances…who the hell would buy that line of crap? Also, as someone who knows Scott Talley, yes he’s a lawyer, and a good one, but he doesn’t handle personal injury cases, and yes his partner does, so obviously they advertise, just like I am sure On Time Truscking does. But hey, at least Mr. Talley pays his taxes and his insurance on his employees, unlike Mr. Bright.

Wow, all this over politicians or wanna be politicians. Everyone is right, after all with the latest in Supreme Court decisions being handed down, we wouldn’t want to exclude the thought that LAWYERS ( hereto after to be named LAND SHARKS) have found that by owning the bar association, ensuring all judges are former(I crack myself up) land sharks and thereby vet not only local, state and federal judges ….Can anyone say monopoly, I don’t think I need to say much more. I’m sure as my mommy used to say “If you look hard enough you’ll find something good about them”. So quit the arguing before someone decides their offended and wants to sue….Something sure to make the Land Sharks smile….after all blood in the water folks…..
By Gene E. Nowak on June 20th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Stoker Ace:
Why does the current signage out side Talley’s firm and yellow pages for their law firm only mention personal injury law?
They appear to have been updated to reflect Talley’s association with the firm. Have I overlooked something?
Why would they mention both attorneys but only advertises the type of work that one of the principles does for the firm?
That does not seem logical way to solicit work for the firm to me.
But what do I know about the workings of a law firm I am a mechanic with a high school education. There must be a perfectly logical reason, why they did not want the public know that one of the partners only practices real estate law.
You state with some rancor and inaccuracy that I have abused Talley by raising questions. But to me, an outsider, that is the only way I can be enlightened by an confident of Scott Talley.
Some of the statements attributed to Scott Talley by his supporters seem to be self serving and overblown. Hype to me. With out any actual facts presented they stridently assure me that I have followed the lead of some outsider group blindly by asking questions and trying to ascertain the truth.
By Charles Dalbec on June 21st, 2008 at 3:29 am
In a time where politicians can not seem to do the right thing Scott Talley has been a wonderful shining star. Lee Bright started his campaign but throwing “MUD” at Scott. I can’t beleive that Lee does not pay Workman’s Compensation for his employees. Also, Lee’s not paying his taxes. I can’t beleive Sanford is endorsing Lee. What has happened to his mind. This will also be the last time I vote for Sanford. Sanford has just ended his political carreer. I’m voting for Scott Talley and proud to be a SC Repubican.

“They want to make the rich richer”
“How can you trust somone that worked for an evil corporation”
“Won’t somone please think of the children”
“Don’t vote for him, he’s an ambulance chaser”
What these statements all have in common is that they are typically made by uneducated people susceptible to demagoguery . “Lawyer hate” is similar to class hatred in that it is an irrational hatred of a class of people usually brought on by ignorance, jealousy, or the propaganda of opposing politicians and special interest groups. Sure, lawyers are not perfect, but we could bring forth examples of misdeeds within all professions. The bottom line is that the vast majority of lawyers are not a group of self serving fat cats smoking cigars, appointing people for there own self intrest (sounds similar the corporation conspiracy liberals often make). Lawyers know more about the practice and development of laws than anyone. Does it not make sense to have them help form the law?
