WE REMEMBER THE NINE FIREFIGHTERS LOST A YEAR AGO TODAY

By The FITS Gals

FITSNews – June 18, 2008 – One year ago today, South Carolina suffered a monumental tragedy as nine firefighters lost their lives in a major blaze at a West Ashley furniture store.

Today, we’d like to remember those heroes and their families, and send them our thoughts and prayers. According to the New York Times:

“It was the worst loss of life for American firefighters since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.”

The Charleston Post and Courier has a heartwarming one-year anniversary section commemorating the tragedy this morning.

The paper also talks to Art Wittner about Station 16, reporting:

Amid heartache, uncertainty and divisiveness, this proud Fire Department has been forced to shed its hard-charging, tradition-bound ways and become a modern outfit that places a premium on firefighters’ lives. That has meant a host of changes for the men on the front lines, many of whom are still deeply wounded from losing nine of their own.

Additionally, the Post and Courier has a multimedia section with photos and videos here.
