THE LAST LECTURE: WATCH IT, READ IT, BE INSPIRED BY IT

By The FITS Gals

FITSNews – June 15, 2008 – In honor of Father’s Day, we wanted to tug on the heartstrings of FITSNews readers everywhere. A few months ago, the FITS Gals were sitting around eating bon bons and watching Oprah and got sucked into the “Last Lecture,” given by Randy Pausch, from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Pausch gave his last lecture to a packed auditorium in September 2007, and since then, more than six million people have viewed the lecture online.

For those of you who live under a rock and don’t know … the last lecture is part of the “Journey” lecture series at CMU where professors share their pearls of wisdom. In this case, however, Pausch was giving his last lecture because he is dying of terminal, pancreatic cancer.

Pausch’s last lecture is about achieving your childhood dreams. He gave the lecture with his children in mind, to leave behind something especially for them.

Pausch is surprised by all the hype:

I am flattered and embarrassed by all the recent attention to my “Last Lecture.” I am told that, including abridged versions, over six million people have viewed the lecture online. The lecture really was for my kids, but if others are finding value in it, that is wonderful. But rest assured; I’m hardly unique.

“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” is about lessons learned and advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals. Sorry Sic Willie, it ain’t about girl on girl action or perfecting the technique.

Also, the phenomenon that is the last lecture was recently turned into a book, published by Hyperion. We don’t know how many people have read the book, we just know it’s going to be around a long time.

Every since I first saw Randy Pausch on Oprah last fall, I’ve been a regular visitor to his website

http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/

and I check his daily update page often, to see how he is doing.

I’ve watched Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture” and his lecture on “Time Management” and this man has shared so much with the world. In May, they showed him on Oprah by satelite, and he said his goal was to be around for Father’s Day. What a wonderful Father’s Day gift this is to him and his family.

His book was a quick read, very inspirational, and a made a wonderful gift to graduates this year – encouraging them to live life to it’s fullest, as he has been doing.

Happy Father’s Day, Randy!

Pancreatic cancer is no excuse to let this guy drone on and on to the kids about working until they get cancer and die. This guy is full of good intentions… then again, so is the road to hell. His message is wholly unimpressive, as it is invariably contradictory. Work really hard to “achieve your dreams”, and give yourself cancer???? Uh, no thank you!

Laurel,
I’m with you a 100% about the droning but haven’t you heard? If not then let me be the first to share the great news: He never really had ductal adenocarcinoma and he has a long time left to live. Now, if you are thinking “I can’t wait until the next book”, let me just say, “Me either”. Hopefully him and James Frey will eventually work together on something. It would be great stuff.

de Selby.
do you have nothing better to do with your life than to travel from blog to blog commenting about how Dr. Pausch is a liar?

I feel truly sorry for you and the misfortunate you must have encountered to make you such a miserable person.

Sophie,
I’m certain you would like for me to be silent. You are one of the many “geniuses” that have attempted to show me how I am wrong about Randy and just like others you offer far less proof of his truthfulness than I have of his lies.

Even though you seem like one of the least intelligent people that I have ever read a posting from, I will give you some credit. For such an unintelligent person you did a very good job of figuring out why it is so disturbing to me that Randy would lie about dying from cancer. You are right Sophie: I have had a lot of misfortune in my life; most of it has centered around cancer. It doesn’t discriminate either; it takes young and old alike.
Randy is NOT dying. I promise you he will not be dead in 10 years but he has profited from lying about dying from an illness that he never had. You find that admirable; I find it disgraceful. He may have had problems with his pancreas but I know that it was not adenocarcinoma. In actuality, NO ONE (other than his family) have seen any proof that he has been diagnosed with ANYTHING more serious than hayfever. But ALL of you are certain he had a maignant condition; It is amazing to me beyond words. You believe on blind faith alone; good for you. I do not because I know that this is easily the most apocryphal and disturbing story that I have ever seen in my life. If Americans will resort to lying about this for money, then we will now lie about anything as long as there is a payoff at the end. It is disgraceful.

Have a good day Sophie and please, for your own good, try to read something over the weekend.

de Selby,

It’s currently being reported that Randy Pausch has passed away. How does it feel to both be wrong and a douche at the same time?

I believe you should always aim for your goals, let nothing stand in the way of dreams, because without dreams we are nothing.
