FITSNews “Undorsement” – Gloria Haskins
WE LOVE HER A LOT, BUT THE TAXPAYERS DESERVE BETTER
FITSNews – June 6, 2008 – We’ve got to admit, it’s been a lot of fun “undorsing” left-wing, status quo “Republicans” like State Representatives Bill Sandifer, Keith Kelly, B.R. Skelton and Bob Walker. After all, if these jokers are going to run around masquerading as Republicans, somebody’s got to have the stones to call them out … we just like to have a little fun doing it.
It gives us no great pleasure, however, to “undorse” people who we actually like, particularly S.C. Rep. Gloria Haskins.
We’ve always had major league girl-crushes on Gloria, especially when she’s given us one of her trademark bear hugs (editor’s note: mamma mia! ) , and we’re very close to several members of her family. The Haskins’ are all “good people,” to be sure, and we honestly believe that Gloria is a caring and honest person who wants the best for this state.
Having said that, we have an obligation to the things we believe in – things like lower taxes, less government, more choices for parents and all those other fiscally conservative, free market reforms Republicans are supposed to support – and unfortunately Rep. Haskins’ record on those issues is pretty much awful.
Haskins’ opponent, Upstate Republican activist Wendy Nanney, has run on a strong fiscally-conservative plank, and we hope the voters of Greenville, S.C. send her to the State House to put those ideas into action.

Will,
How much then do we value civility? I mean, do we take a person who is more conservative even if we can’t stand them? Do you want a bunch of people who are all conservative but won’t get anything done because of the rancor? I’m not knocking Ms. Nanney, I don’t know her and I’m thrilled that she’s fiscally conservative, I’d ask the same question no matter who Ms. Haskin’s opponent was.

This race and the whole BJU crowd cracks me up. Amazing similiarities. Would the Sheik be a SC Republican, I think so.
Hey, hey, what are we fighting for…………

“Lower taxes? S. C. rates 44th out of the 50 states in taxes paid per capita by its citizens. School choice? South Carolinians have the right to send their kids to any public or private school that they choose. Less gov’t? It would seem that if you are last in most of the good categories and first in many of the bad, that many you ought to try something different for a change and not more of the same. Fiscally conservative, free market reforms–give me a few examples of some on the state level that you would suggest be passed. This state can’t even raise the nation’s lowest cigarette tax (thanks to the governor’s veto) to help the poor obtain health insurance or prevent our youth from taking up smoking.

Sic, any insights on the Lexington County Auditor’s race would be appreciated. Is the new one a rino?

Gillon is clearly a supporter of Gloria Haskins.
Yes, Republicans need to try something a little different. But if they raise taxes as you implicitly propose, they cease to be Republicans.
Perhaps Ms. Haskins (like many in SC state government) is in the wrong party.

You have an obligation to the people who pay you. That’s how it works.
