WANT SOME JIHAD WITH YOUR COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS?

By Mande Wilkes

FITSNews - May 29, 2008 - Seriously, when did the universe get so bland and boring that people have to invent stuff to offend them? What we’re about to report is such a non-controversy that you’re going to wish we were making it up - and we wish we were, because that would be a real testament to our creativity. Anyway, here goes …

PC indignation reached an all-time high recently when TV cook Rachael Ray wore an offensive scarf in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial. Now, to be honest, this wasn’t just any ole’ scarf. In fact, it’s so heinously ugly and grotesquely hideous that Ray’s stylist should lose her job just for thinking of yanking it off of grandma’s dining room table.

Indeed, the fuss would be well-founded if it were directed toward the ugliness of the scarf, but alas, Ray is under fire not for her inexcusable absence of fashion sense, but for empathizing with terrorists.

That’s right … since the scarf is designed like a keffiyeh, some a-rab word which apparently means “cloth of terror,” some people are actually insinuating that Ray is attempting to relay some kind of sympathetic subliminal message regarding terrorism.

And in a pathetic demonstration of its utter gutlessness, Dunkin’ Donuts has pulled the ad.

While I agree this is ridiculous because her scarf looks simply like a scarf, I’d like to play the devil’s advocate. We must remember symbols have always represented an important part of all cultures throughout time. Had Rachel Ray worn a swastika arm band or white hood the world would have been appalled. I am amazed that certain forms of dress have become en vogue. As an expatriate from the U.S. it disturbs me that we can be so insensitive especially after 911 and I can only attribute this to ignorance. For many of us living elsewhere in the world, we see up close what these symbols represent. These organizations and governments actively support the suppression of women, the banning of freedom of religion and speech, and the tacit acceptance of violence against innocent human beings all in the name of a cause or belief. Have we become so P.C. that we refuse to tell the truth or are we somehow hoping that our own human/democratic values are also shared by all? Read, listen and observe. Actions always speak louder than words. Remember, symbols are powerful messages!

Good Freaking Grief! Symbols? I’ve gotta symbol for you… Some silly little conservative know-nothing is bored with her blogs and constant blah-blahs so she claims this scarf is a symbol; that it reflects terrorism and, GASP, it looks so, so, what’s the word…Muslim. And then Dunkin’ decides that it has no balls and pulls the ad.

You people need a life. Stop worrying about everyone else and their religion and stop telling the rest of us that we need to be outraged and afraid. I am afraid, really. Of the new American Taliban — Conservative bloggers and talk show hosts and the Baptist Association.
