Keith Kelly Gets Our “Undorsement”

PEOPLE THIS DUMB SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO VOTE, LET ALONE GET ELECTED

FITSNews – May 28, 2008 – We’re not sure whether this video is an advertisement for S.C. Rep. Keith Kelly, or one for his opponent. What else do you say about a campaign video that opens with this pearl of wisdom:

Hello, I’m Keith Kelly. Growing up I learned many things from the seat of this old tractor, and one of ‘em was to keep my thumb on the outside of the steering wheel when I was plowin’ the field. Otherwise, you’d get your thumb broken …

Uhhh … okay.

Anyway, Kelly also points out in this groundbreaking bit of political commentary that he supported Gov. Mark Sanford and Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers as the two “assessed” the damage done to South Carolina’s peach crop during an early April “hard freeze.” We’re not sure exactly what “supporting” somebody else’s “assessing” means precisely, but our guess is that it involves Representative Kelly not doing a whole heckuva lot.

Sadly, that’s a skill he has mastered during his one term as a sideline suck-up to the Democrats on every issue under the sun.

We have no idea who Kelly’s opponent is on June 10, but if that individual has a pulse, then he or she is our recommendation to the good people of Spartanburg.

That Club for Growth money sure must be nice. Maybe after the primary you can move out of that shithole you live in.

Anyway, have you see Kelly’s daughter? The statuesque redhead who works as a House page? She’s mindblowingly gorgeous, and he should be re-elected just for producing her. Kelly for President, IMO!!!

Well, I’ve checked. My pulse is fine, so I gladly accept the recommendation. The good people of Spartanburg, in the very conservative District 35, know of Mr. Kelly’s record and seem ready to make a change. Who knows? They might even elect someone who’s gonna support Gov. Sanford’s policies and not just his assessments!

Double amen on Kelly’s daughter! The female version of FITS’s “Who’s Hot at the State House List” will never be complete without her.

Roger — How are you approaching the school choice tax credit concept?

Are you concerned that Gov. Sanford’s proposal didn’t guarantee anything to the poorest kids in the state (after all, a tax “credit” would assume enough income to qualify)? Scholarship-granting organization might step up to help some kids — maybe even many — but there were absolutely no promises to the poorest children (that, of course, being the population, in general, with the lowest test scores, highest dropout rates, etc.).

Are you concerned about the impact on public schools in Spartanburg County? I’m sure that as a business person you do realize that “the money following the child” doesn’t necessarily mean that school districts can reduce overhead costs.

Do you think it’s realistic at all to figure that there will be private school availability to students in Spartanburg County who need the most attention? Will Oakbook or Spartanburg Day accept students with low test scores or iffy discipline records? Some have touted the prospect of start-up schools in the “marketplace”….are you confident of that happening in Spartanburg? How are you going to get District 6 kids from Una or Arcadia out to a start-up school private that might be located near Woodland Heights?

I don’t consider myself an idelogical hardliner on this stuff, but I do think there are some serious practical questions. So I wondered if you stood with Gov. Sanford on this stuff and how you’d see it shaking out in Spartanburg.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, Gov. Sanford has touted school consolidation. If that is correct (I’m pretty sure it is) do you stand with Gov. Sanford on the prospect of consolidating school districts in Spartanburg?

Are there other ways, short of consolidation, that you would encourage partnership among Spartanburg districts and innovative collaboration?

    Roger-

To you stand with Governor Sanford on being an idiot? Does the fact that he’s an idiot make you more or less likely to stand by him? Perhaps, standing by him may make you appear more intelligent? Or look less like Alfred E. Newman?

Sorry, baker. It’s a nutthouse around here. Anyway, to answer your questions briefly, I am not familiar enough with Sanford’s proposals (as they relate to school “choice”) to give you a detailed answer. In general I will tell you that I am fundamentally opposed to supporting private schools with tax $ for two reasons : 1. I’m sure there will be many beliefs and policies that I don’t agree with and have no control over that will have to be supported. 2. Once money starts flowing in that direction we (the state) will have to start regulating it and that will only add to the overhead and bureaucracy problem that we are already facing.
As far as tax credits, I think you are exactly right. There are some serious practical questions that need to be addressed and I will have to see a plan that will actually work in the real world (not just on paper) before I can support it. Every time government comes up with a new program it tends to underfund and under prepare for it. We need to look at some real changes that are well thought out and practical. I’m sorry I can’t be any more specific than that. I’m just trying to give you my philosophy and where my guiding principles are.
I am also against the 1 school district proposal. I think there are many other problems we can tackle in Spartanburg County before this becomes an issue. Hope this helps.
