The Academic Magnet has entrance requirements, minimums. It is publicly funded, but not any/all students who wish may go there. It should not be compared point by point with a high school that must take all who live in its attendance zone. You are comparing apples to oranges in that instance. Also, a comprehensive high school like Dutch Fork or Wando (in Mount Pleasant) not only takes everyone in its attendance zone, but as in the latter school, the school may also have to accept transfer students from inadequate schools due to the requirements of No Child Left Behind.

Also, Wando is evaluated on how special needs students perform...with more than 40 in the SN group, those students are considered part of the school population. Academic Magnet does not have this population, a population with handicaps and issues that inhibit or limit the possible scores on normed tests.

Is the Academic Magnet a good school? Yes, but it does not have the challenges presented to schools like Dutch Fork, Wando, or others without the ability to accept/reject students.

Even though there are only two schools on the top 350 list from south carolina, dutch fork realllly should be on there! even though a lot of schools in south carolina do need to get their act together, there are some that should be recognized for its hard work. its good that there are at least two on the list, but we need to get that number up, and find ways to make the drop out rate less and the educational system more organized.

You guys keep putting forth this arbitrary 350 number. Why don't we cut it off at top 10 and say that SC has 10% of the top schools? The fact is that the rating included more than a thousand schools in the United States, and as PalmettoCPA points out, SC is about right on target nationally -- slightly ahead, actually -- if you look at proportional population figures.

Ok this guy ahead of me is annoying...

but anyways I honestly think that Dutch Fork is an awesome school and deserves to be up there.
Sic Willie had really good points when he came to my current issues class and really made us think about what's going on around us. The drop out rate is horrible though I do agree with that and also that the education system is embarrassing but their are good school's just like Dutch Fork.
- and he's not riding a dead horse cause technically I don't think you'd go anywhere just like your point...

SC, lets shoot for less gun crimes, gang crimes, drunk driving, and lets also at least try to get 53.9% of students to graduate next year.

i realize that only two of our South Carolina's schools are ranked in the top 350 schools in our nation. But on the bright side, at least South Carolina is beginning to place. However, things would definitely be better if South Carolina schools would focus on the more important things like testing, rather than un-needed fluff that they continue to teach. It's pretty pathetic.

sic(k) willie,

You're riding a dead horse. The voucher scam has been exposed and has as much chance of getting through the Legislature as you have of getting back in the gubernator's orifice. Sorry, 'office.'

The most successful schools in S.C. prove our points.

Fix funding issues and latent racism and poverty and the rash of social ills that come with racism and poverty.

Then maybe we will talk about your voucher scam.

im not suprised that only two schools from South Carolina are ranked in the top 350 schools in the nation. My current issues class at Dutch Fork High School (which sic willie came to our class) has disccused the negtive points of South Carolina's schools. Since our drop-out rate is one of the worst in the nations, i think our state needs to get off their butts and start making our state's schools the best they can be and giving students the best learning possible. I know that education is the key to almost everything and we need to change our HORRIBLE education system and start going up in ranking of schools. South Carolina's education system is just embarassing.
