Shootin’ Around With Darrin Horn May 15, 2008

FITSNews - May 15, 2008 - Ever since the University of South Carolina named Darrin Horn its new men’s basketball coach last month, the FITS gals have been chomping at the bit to sit down with the 35-year old Western Kentucky hottie.
As it turns out, our founding editor Sic Willie initially refused to publish such an interview because he was still “irrevocably pissed off” at South Carolina athletics. Like … this pissed off.
Later, of course, we found out the real reason for Sic’s hostility wasn’t some thinly-repressed Spurrier angst, it stemmed from the fact Horn is simply a lot better looking than he is. Which makes him insanely jealous.
Anyway, at long last, we finally got the chance to do the interview today (editor’s note: hat-tip Casey M ) …
FITSNews: Tell us a little bit about the nucleus of talent that you’ve got here and where you see the program going. South Carolina had some flashes of brilliance under Fogler during the late 1990’s but the program didn’t seem to capitalize on that. What do you see as the biggest challenge to winning consistently?
Darren: Well I think the biggest thing is that we’ve got some great things in place here. We’ve got great support, this is a great community, it’s an outstanding school and a great league and there’s some strong tradition here to build upon. That being said, we’ve got a lot of work to do in terms of recruiting and instilling a mentality of winning and a new style of play.
FITSNews: Talk about the guys coming back. Obviously there’s talent there and some players with skill, but how do you fill holes, and what holes do you see in terms of the personnel that you want to address through recruiting?
Darren: I think the thing we have to keep in mind is that we won just two league games at home last year. So while we have some pieces, we’ve got to get more out of the pieces that we have and look to build around them and basically that means we’re going to have to recruit in every area and try to upgrade.
FITSNews: Tell us about your decision to take this job and how that process went. What factored into that and do you see yourself staying here a long time?
Darren: I think taking this job was probably my biggest statement in how much I believe that it can be a great place and a place where we can win big. But it was also really a comfortable situation in terms of coming from my alma mater, you know, financially the difference wasn’t going to be that much by the time they tried to match what South Carolina did … but I think this place is really special. I think it has special people, it’s got great traditions, an outstanding community and we play in one of the best leagues in America. The biggest motivator was the opportunity to work in a place like this for guy like Eric Hyman where I think we can be relevant nationally.
Thanks for taking the time, coach, and best of luck next season!

Casey M is pretty hot. I know you covered that in your Who’s Hot at the State House post awhile back and that it has damn near nothing to do with the substance of this post, but anyway … she’s pretty hot.
Oh, and Horn’s cool. Go Cocks!!!
