They Let Him In A Public School? May 13, 2008

CIVICS CLASS - SIC WILLIE STYLE

FITSNews - May 13, 2008 - For all the deadly-accurate, “Valley of Elah” -type stones we throw at public education here in South Carolina, the fact remains there are more than a few public schools in this state that are actually doing their jobs … and then some.  Sure, it’s hard to tell that from the national rankings, but several Palmetto public schools are producing kids who are not only prepared to survive in the 21st Century world we live in, but thrive in it.

Take Dutch Fork High School, for example, a national blue-ribbon winner which has consistently ranked as one of the top schools in America despite the fact that local voters rejected two recent bond referendum’s for its parent district, Lexington-Richland School District Five.

Hmmm … guess more money really isn’t  always the answer.

Anyway, Sic Willie had the privilege of hanging out this morning with a group of Dutch Fork freshmen and sophomores, and our founding editor was totally impressed by how on top of it and “clued in” each one of these kids were.  Not only do they know everything that’s going on at the S.C. State House (they even helped get a new driving safety bill passed through the legislature) but they’re up to speed on the latest happenings on the presidential trail and up on Capitol Hill, as well. Oh, and in case any of you were wondering, Sic was on his best behavior with the young ladies in the class, although he may or may not have tried to ”get his mack on” afterward with their teacher, Miss Payne, who we must admit gives a whole new meaning to that old Van Halen song.

Seriously, though, each one of the kids in this class (most of whom are avid FITSNews readers) could step in right now and do a better job of leading this state than the current crop of ass-clowns in the General Ass-embly.

Trust us, if every public school in this state was doing as good a job educating its kids as this one, we’d have nothing to gripe about.

that’s frightning….

Did he tell them to walk out immediately and demand entrance to Cardinal Newman, Heathwood and Hammond?

Is that t-shirt a “wife beater?”

3. fitsnews - May 13, 2008

It’s actually BJ McKie’s practice jersey from the 1998 SEC Champion Gamecock basketball team.

-FITSNews

4. Trey - May 13, 2008

Did they get any chicken macnuggets as part of the “education”?

5. abc - May 13, 2008

It’s got more to do with the active parental involvement in the lives of the students and in that particular school. Put the same teachers in a different district/school, the results would be opposite. Sad, but true.

6. smart kid Grant - May 13, 2008

hey, what’s up, I thought that I would put my political insight into this because frankly, I was there. He did a god job of explaining himself, and he said that he was the one who was leading the charge against the first referendum, and I personally believe that District 5 does need a new school, we are currently about 400-500 people over the maximum capacity of 1700 people at Dutch Fork. Furthermore, I think that Sic Willie himself should have tried to navigate his way out of there in-between classes to see how we felt everyday, 4+times a day. It would have been justice. Anyway, thanks for coming, it was very interesting, even though I did miss lunch to see it.

7. Jeffrey Sewell - May 13, 2008

Good job Will! It is true that we have successful public schools; the problem is the inconsistency and the effect on the SC economy as a whole not to mention the quality of life for all South Carolinians.

If we really care about our children’s future let’s let the money follow the child, give parents true choice as they should have the ultimate choice in their children’s future, we have to come together on education and if it were not for Hamas and other extremist attempting to nuke America, education would be a number one issue in this political cycle!

8. BJ Mac - May 13, 2008

cardinal newman? really?

9. Palmetto Pulse - May 13, 2008

I hate the Gamecocks. And for the record, you look terrible in garnet and black.

10. Believe It Not (a.k.a. Sic Willie's Stalker) - May 14, 2008

sic(k) willie says he “was the one who was leading the charge against the first referendum” in District 5. What a pimp!

Now, everyone knows who to blame for the increasing suffering of children in District 5. Is he also to blame for the suffering of children in Richland One and the Corridor of Shame? Probably!

sic(k) willie, you’re a fraud. You know why Dutch Fork works. If you bus kids from the Corridor of Shame over to District 5, what do you think would happen? You know. It would prove our point.

You can’t fix public education in SC until you fix the real underlying issues. Fix poverty; latent racism, and the related social ills that you and your voucher scam pimps don’t have the courage to face.

Vouchers are a scam. sic(k) willie is a pimp for vouchers.

11. Believe It Not (a.k.a. Sic Willie's Stalker) - May 14, 2008

Jeffrey,

You wrote “let the money follow the child” which means abandon the child who does not have money.

And, you said “if we really care about our children’s future” which really means “we really only care about the future of children who have money that we can follow into private schools.” $$$$$$

Jeff, you and sic(k) willie are such voucher scam pimps.

12. The money following the child.... - May 14, 2008

is state money, Believe it Not. Whether you consider this a good idea or not, your above post proves you ain’t paying much attention.

13. Natasha - May 14, 2008

Here is an old one but good one…

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Stossel/story?id=1500338

“Jay Greene, author of “Education Myths,” points out that “If money were the solution, the problem would already be solved … We’ve doubled per pupil spending, adjusting for inflation, over the last 30 years, and yet schools aren’t better.” ”

SC should do like Belgium…

“In Belgium, by contrast, the money is attached to the kids — it’s a kind of voucher system. Government funds education — at many different kinds of schools — but if a school can’t attract students, it goes out of business.

Belgian school principal Kaat Vandensavel told us she works hard to impress parents.

She told us, “If we don’t offer them what they want for their child, they won’t come to our school.” “

14. Silver Fox - May 14, 2008

In the late 90s, majority white Dutch Fork (a classmate of mine once called it “Sweet Valley High”) was sending obsolete textbooks to majority-black Allendale. Just like during separate-but-equal days! Then they allowed a convicted woman-beater, pathological liar and general shitheel to speak. No wonder I graduated early to leave that bastion of the nouveau-riche.

BTW – DF has great facilities because of the screwed-up way we fund our schools, with property taxes. Rich areas get good schools, poor areas get bad schools. Simple.

15. Pete - May 14, 2008

Fits girls: Do y’all need the phone number of the TLC channel’s What Not to Wear or what?

16. Wow - May 14, 2008

Natasha, your argument in favor of the Belgian model assumes that ALL parents care about the education children receive. I’d echo post #10’s comments, in that parents don’t give a crap about their children (or know their children) along the I-95 corridor (and other areas of our state).

17. foxybloggers - May 14, 2008

The answer to the problem in South Carolina’s failing schools won’t be found with more money, hiring more teachers, rewriting curriculum or even building new unnecessary schools. The answer to this abysmal problem is to be found in freedom. The freedom of parents to choose how their tax paying dollars are spent to educate their children! We agree that the money needs to follow the child. Government schools need to be put in competition with one another by allowing free enterprise. Choice should not be limited to just government schools but private schools as well. Yes, (abc) parental involvement is good, and has the potential to grow with giving them a choice! The responsibility of their children should be in their hands and with the choice not just limited to geographical boundaries that the state mandates. Competition can bring about innovation that we don’t even know exits! An entire new industry could form around this concept of school choice and vouchers. Do we not live and work in an economic system based on competitive free-enterprise competing for the best jobs? We teach our children to compete for recognition through the best grades and awards, we teach our children to compete through winning in sports!! As adults we even compete for our mates, why not accept that to compete is human nature?? There will always be and always have been amazing teachers out there. I don’t predict a mass exodus from this most gratifying respectable profession from those that truly want what is in the best interests of our children. Therefore, South Carolina schools should stress excellence brought on by free and open competition!

18. foxybloggers - May 14, 2008

For the Silver Fox Blogger:

Hey Silver Fox- or shall we say “Enter to Learn Go Forth to Serve” graduate? - The Foxybloggers think you need to take a much needed trip on a DeLorian- and speed ahead 10 years into the future at DF. Nowadays in the late 2000’s you will notice that 30% of our students or over 600 of the individuals that attend this school are not just “white” anymore- we even have some orange and blue people hanging out here. Do you think if Hitler was still alive he would have read “Sweet Valley High”? The once bastion of the nouveau –riche that you once had to endure, (you poor thing) must have been horrid unmitigated suffering, lucky for us it is long gone!! Today a great majority of our student population finds shelter in neighborhoods called “The Gate”,” The Walk”, and “The Stone”.

Addressing “Sic Willies” much anticipated invitation to guest speak in our “kick-tush” class we really hope that DF did not teach you that censorship or discrimination is legal. If they did then you have been swayed by the finest political demagoguery. We really hope you are not referring to our much admired “Sic Wille” in your epithetic slurs, however, if you are it is your 1st amendment right to do so.

To respond to your BTW- remark- are you suggesting that we punish the children in the districts that collect more property taxes by equally distributing unearned revenue? Last time we checked “great facilities” can’t be compared to a great sense of individuality, a great sense of self-worth and the understanding of what is means to live in a truly free society! Didn’t your parents ever tell you the story how they had to walk 100 miles to school every day in 5 feet of snow with no shoes?

19. justWondern - May 14, 2008

Boxyfloggers 18 — It was only 35 miles in 14 inches of snow, but it was uphill both ways.

20. reggie - May 14, 2008

hey, i just wanted to say thanks sic willie for coming to my class the other day. you kick ass, seriously.

the reason why SC’s education sucks is because the (im stealing your line sic will,) “ass clowns” arnt spending enough time and money on the schools. if the state actually cared, then we wouldnt have to deal with the corridors of shame and the 53.8% graduation rate. the state seems to only care about the schools really doing well like Dutch Fork and other schools like Cardnial Newman

another problem that i would like to point out is that public education sucks. ive seen it with my own eyes. the kids that come from private schools or those that are home-schooled do 1410324812390712398 times better than the kids that have been in public school for so long.

anyway, i hope to see you at DF another time.
keep kickin ass

21. smart kid Grant - May 14, 2008

foxyblogger, I think that you are a little bit skewed in your opinion in this (you are a teacher there), so maybe you should talk to your best student before posting next time, you have my email. See you Friday.

22. Sollicitus Civis - May 14, 2008

I continue to wonder that once the vouchers are given out, and school choice is a reality, from where are these “new” market-based schools going to spring? Most of these communities cannot even attract a new grocery store.

23. fitsnews - May 14, 2008

#20 - Reggie, you are officially Sic Willie and the FITS Gals No. 1 fan … keep up the good work, dude. You and your classmates are definitely going places!

24. mark brown - May 14, 2008

Hey sick willy,
I attended Irmo High School and i feel it was much harder to have better scores due to location. dutchfork has all the tools to succeed as very succesful high school but what about all the other schools we need to worry about other schools more than the schools who already have it all

25. Mercedes - May 15, 2008

i really enjoyed you coming to our class! you are such a down to earth dude. & TO YOU SMART KID GRANT IF YOU WERE HERE YOU COULD OF ADDED YOUR TWO CENTS TO OUR “SKEWED PERSPECITVE” but you weren’t so…. yeah. but like i said really enjoyed you and you need to come back again and talk with our class thanks

26. foxblog - May 15, 2008

GIVE THE CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE. Teachers determine if students learn or if we just sit through class. MS. PAYNE ROCKS! She’s the best teacher at DFHS. She makes Current Events classes fun and pushes us to want to learn. I wish she’d been a math teacher because she probably could’ve motivated me to learn math. Instead I just went to lots of boring math classes and learned nothing. You’re our hero Ms. Payne. You should teach all the TEACHERS! Thanks for getting Sic Willie to speak to us.

27. Kristy - May 15, 2008

To Smart Kid Grant:
Mrs. Paynes opinion has nothing to do with what you think…so to say “maybe you should talk to your best student before posting next time” is a little bit ridiculous. &Sorry to BUST your bubble but you’re not the best student at this school, I am….can’t you take a little ‘competition’?

To Sic Willie:
You were awesome You really told us a lot about what Mrs. Payne has already taught us in a simpler way..that helped me understand. I LOVE YOUR DRAWINGS hahah & you’re intresting as a speaker, because you bring humor into the points you’re trying to get across. Thank you for comming.

Kristy.

28. keenan & marcus - May 15, 2008

29. Trey - May 15, 2008

30. georgiana - May 15, 2008

31. reggie - May 15, 2008

32. Deris - May 15, 2008

-To “SILVER FOX” and “Believe it or not” [in honor of Sic Wille and FoxyBloggers]-
I must say for you to be a former Dutch Frok student, I’m very surprised that you would even attempt to make such a hebetudinous comment as the one you made. I’m not white, however I attend Dutch Fork High. Not to be rude, but I spend a lot of my time in the low country of South Carolina so I can pretty much bet that there are more children that aren’t white at the school now (9 to 12 graders) in THIS school term than students who actually made something of themselves after graduation from the school you teach at IN A RANGE OF TEN YEARS. Not because of the money we have (Believe it or not) but because we work really really hard to get those fundings. I understand you think it’s unfair that we get more money than other schools but we also give more money than most schools to the government as well. You have to consider “Give a little to get a little” or a little thing called “Friendly Competition”. Sic Wille had a lot of good points to make inside our classroom and told us about “real” things our government lives on. Sic Willie did a sensational job speaking to our class and if anybody thinks he shouldn’t have been “Let in a public school’ that’s fine. Eveeryone can express their opinons. That’s how the African-Americans stand up to the Dutch Fork name. By staying politicly informed as well as asking questions in order to understand before speaking. For instance, what was the white to minority ratio of a high school you formally attended?.

33. Believe It Not (a.k.a. Sic Willie's Stalker) - May 15, 2008

sic(k) willie, you’re such a fraud. Did you write #20’s post or did RJ? Whoever wrote it was illiterate or drunk. Or, both!! Illtetarate and druank is bad. Check it out, your supporter rote: “..Cardnial Newman..” Then rote “…did a sensational job speaking to our class and if anybody thinks he shouldn’t have been “Let in a public school’ that’s fine. Eveeryone can express their opinons.”

Eveeyone!! Amen.

sic(k) willie, you need help!

34. Kristy - May 16, 2008

To #33 actually a freshmen wrote that.

But sic willie I put the fitsnews link on my myspace for you.

35. baker - May 16, 2008

foxybloggers….Should the “open competition” also be “fair competition”? If a private school can set admission policies — no trouble-makers, only students with solid grades and test scores — then should its public school competitors be allowed to do the same?

36. Foxybloggers - May 16, 2008

Good Question #35 Baker- Yes the open competition should be fair competition! We’d even like to see the abolishment of the Department of Education, and return control of our local schools to the communities and relieve taxpayers of unnecessary bureaucracy, like the Republicans had promised during the 1993 political campaign. (Too bad they didn’t follow through) Competition improves the quality of virtually any product or service—including education. Therefore, students will need to also be competitive in order to be able to maintain a spot in the best schools. The federal government should remove all regulatory barriers to fostering school competition through voucher programs, and yes even religious schools!!

37. a sober/sophisticated freshman, reggie - May 16, 2008

hey, believe it or not,
if all your gonna do is bitch about sic, then start your own blog. stop hatin, excuse me, exerting hatred upon sic(k) willie, just because your mom did him last night and forgot to breast feed you.

another thing that you can do is stop using re-writing other people’s blogs to your fitting.

so this is for you believe it or not:
FUCK YOU
dont hate on me just because i probably make more than you, your mom, your grand children, and your sister/wife combined.

please, stop the hate BIN

38. reggie - May 16, 2008

oh yeah, one last thing BIN,

your the first one to bash the public school system and i agree, it sucks (seen #20). but i am willing to bet that the last time that you were in school you majored in the three r’s: reading riting and rythmatic.

grow up

39. Deris - May 16, 2008

-To Believe it or not-

Look, for someone with such a smart mouth, you sure as hell don’t have room to talk. You said: ” Illtetarate and druank is bad. Check it out, your supporter rote…”. I don’t think that one: the first sentence is even classified as a true sentence and two WROTE is not spelled r-o-t-e. You really should consider checking your damn self before you ever step to me or to anybody else about anything you supersillious ass-wipe. I’m glad you took the time to read my thoughts though. Next time if you want to talk shit about a mistake I or anyone else made, don’t make it yourself. Thanks and have a great day!!

EVERYONE Amen!!! *smiles*

40. Believe It Not (a.k.a. Sic Willie's Stalker) - May 16, 2008

sci(k) willie,

You and your blog are frauds. We have neither the time or patience to expose your foolishness. If you have any intelligent readers (we know of 3) they’ll see through your scams. You need a better webmaster.

And, to Deris, study harder in your English class. Maybe someday you can get a job werking for sic(k) willie’s blug. :)

41. reggie - May 16, 2008

42. Deris - May 17, 2008

-Believe it or not-

Thanks but no that’s. I actually have a job. Ironicly enough, I think it pays me more than you’ll ever have or make in you intire life. I’m almost finish with a program that you couldn’t even imagine being accepted into for plastic surgery. (That’s on top of my job.) now tell me I need help in english and I know for a fact my English skills are a a 3 year college level. Who knows, maybe you might pick up a few things from me W-O-R-K-I-N-G in your english.
A quick question, You say it’s a faud, but how? You continue to state your opinon, nobody’s changing it. There is a diffrence in being a fraud and haveing a lot of people supporting you and the way you think. Just food for the thought.

43. BIN News - May 17, 2008

Will. You’re such a pimp and a fraud.

44. reggie - May 17, 2008

BIN
just stop the hate.

45. Tyler - May 18, 2008

Will, man, you’re cool and it was great having you speak to our class.

Also, I have no idea who wrote something about this, but just because some teachers are spoiled with the environment they have at some places like Dutch Fork does not mean they are not good teachers and if they were put in a school that doesn’t have as much opportunities as private school students, they could do an excellent job.

All in one sentence, hope it makes sense.

46. Kellan? - May 19, 2008

Hey Sic Willie! It was just plain awsome having you come to class! If I had any say-so in the mater, I would have you doin’ that every A-day!
