We Fought The Law And …
WE WON? WAIT … THAT’S NOT HOW THE SONG IS SUPPOSED TO GO!
FITSNews - May 7, 2008 - We were “breakin’ rocks in the hot sun” today when one of our attorneys called on the satellite phone and told us FITSNews had won the whole First Amendment dust-up we were embroiled in over the weekend.
In case you missed it, we were instructed on Saturday to remove some controversial recordings related to State Sen. Randy Scott’s DUI arrest from our website.
We declined to do so, very politely begging these would-be censors to attach their lips to our incredibly smooth and curvaceous posteriors.
Anyway, the judge in this case has now lifted his prior restraint order - in large part based on our recalcitrance …
From the Spartanburg Herald-Journal:
First Circuit Court Judge James Williams Jr. on Friday ordered a Charleston newspaper not to post recordings of phone calls Scott made from his jail cell after his attorneys argued it could keep Scott from receiving a fair trial and questioned whether the jail should have taped the conversations.
But Will Folks, a former spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford, on Saturday posted audio of the calls on his political Web site - www.fitsnews.com.
Lawyers for the newspaper were thus able to invoke the incredibly effective “cat’s out of the bag” argument.
Incidentally, Sic Willie wants everyone to know that he has an orange and white kitty and his name is Folly. And he loves Folly very much. And Folly is a good kitty and Folly loves Sic Willie very much.
Moving on … some may presume the lesson to be learned here is that our First Amendment liberties are sacred and essential instruments in the fight to preserve America’s democratic institutions - and that any attempt to infringe upon those liberties is an affront to America itself. Of course, we think the real story is what a bunch of badasses we are here at FITSNews and how you really, really (really) don’t want to f*ck with our attorneys.
UPDATE - In case you’re wondering, that’s singer Mike Ness (formerly of Social Distortion) in the video above. Rock on, man! Play Ball & Chain!

Will,
The “folks” on blogland were the champions on this issue. Thanks for your stand on this and the many other important issues presently facing South Carolinians. You’re a champion and thanks again.

Well done, although I would have preferred either the Clash’s or the Dead Kennedy’s cover for the musical accompaniment.

Congrats! I thought Sic Willie would have to change his name to Publius.

Definitely the Clash.
Folks is on the Blogland? Wow … well, if he is, then he’d better bring beer and hookers. It’s been gettin’ lonely since we’re graduating and thus not able to hang out at CofC and watch the young ladies go by.
