Death Toll Climbs To 22,500 In Myanmar May 6, 2008

FITSNews - May 6, 2008 - The death toll from a powerful cyclone in Southeast Asia has climbed to over 22,500 people, with over 40,000 people still missing. From the New York Times:
The death toll was the latest in a steadily escalating official count since Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar early Saturday, devastating much of the fertile Irrawaddy Delta and Yangon, the nation’s main city.
At a news conference in Yangon, the minister for relief and resettlement, Maung Maung Swe, said 41,000 people were still missing in the aftermath of the cyclone, which triggered a surge of water inland from the sea.
Amazingly, this tragedy still pales in comparison to the estimated 283,000 lives lost when a tsunami struck Southeast Asia in December 2004.
The deadliest natural disaster in recorded history was the 1931 flood of the Yellow River in China, with estimates ranging from 1 million - 3.7 million lives lost. Another Yellow River flood in 1887 killed an estimated 800,000 - 2 million people.
UPDATE - Here’s an interesting take on how the Burmese government failed its people by not providing adequate warnings of the impending storm.

… Okay, let’s just take inventory of the state of the globe…
Cyclones, Earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, diseases, food-shortage, etc., etc., etc.… uh, HELLO WORLD!! That would be the alarm clock buzzing!!!!
“If people will neither be awakened by the greatest things, nor allured by the sweetest things,
nor startled by the most terrible things, nor be made aware by the plainest of things;
if they will listen to the voice neither of Scripture, nor reason, nor experience,
nor providence, nor conscience, nor interest, what more can be done?”
– Matthew Henry -
T,
You will have fun trying to point out a time in world history when ” Cyclones, Earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, diseases, food-shortage, etc., etc., etc” were not an issue for someone.
M- these passages are from Luke 21…if you haven’t read them, now is the time. Yes, there have been natural disasters since the beginning of time… but never have we seen so many back to back to back and yet God has been so merciful to allow even MORE time for people to draw near to Him. All He asks of us is to BELIEVE HIM and be obedient to His word. God has given us HIS holy word to equip us…and in it….He tells us to watch for certain things…and I certainly believe that the end is drawing near.
5Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6″As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.”
7″Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”
8He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
10Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
25″There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
29He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
32″I tell you the truth, this generation[b] will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
34″Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap. 35For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
um -T - how about it’s just another third world overthrown dictatorship breeding ground for ignorance?
Jude v. 17-18: “in the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires. These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural insticts and do not have the Spirit.”
T - do you run a ranch in Hilldale, Utah, Texas or New Mexico?
no, I’m not a freak…I’m simply a Christian. It doesn’t surprise me that I’ve gotten these responses anyway. Without the Holy Spirit, God’s wisdom is foolishness to men. If you aren’t following Christ, you are rejecting Him. There is no middleland here….so I suggest you figure out whether or not you believe the gospel to be truth or if you are marked for slaughter.
