SUPREME COURT RULES INDIANA VOTING LAW CONSTITUTIONAL
FITSNews - April 28, 2008 - Again, that picture of Lindsay Lohan is entirely relevant to this post because a) we’re talking about drivers’ licenses, and b) that’s her drivers’ license.
Anyway, the Supreme Court ruled yesterday that an Indiana law requiring voters to present a photo ID when they show up at the polls is constitutional, meaning that you better have your license with you when you show up to vote in Indiana:
The Supreme Court ruled Monday that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights, validating Republican-inspired voter ID laws.
In a splintered 6-3 ruling, the court upheld Indiana’s strict photo ID requirement, which Democrats and civil rights groups said would deter poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots. Its backers said it was needed to deter fraud.
South Carolina has been debating new voting laws - in fact, a House subcommittee led by Rep. Alan Clemmons spent a good bit of time discussing them a few weeks back - so we’ll have to see if this ruling spurs any similar action here in the Palmetto State.
