Incident Report: Drunk Senator “Berated” Deputies April 21, 2008

DORCHESTER SHERIFF’S OFFICE: SCOTT “APPEARED TO BE INTIMIDATING” OFFICERS
FITSNews - April 21, 2008 - The Dorchester County (S.C.) Sheriff’s Office has just released an incident report confirming information contained in our exclusive report yesterday about a State Senator’s arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence.
In our exclusive report yesterday afternoon, we published information from our sources saying that S.C. Senator Randy Scott pitched “a royal hissy-fit inside the pokey” after his arrest, which Scott’s attorney said later was part of a “political smear campaign” against his client. Well, according to the incident report, Scott’s attorney can kiss our asses:
(Sgt. Randy) Botten wrote that once at the station, Scott “berated and at sometimes appeared to be intimidating deputies.”
For the record, we’d like to reiterate that the best part of this story is the fact that Scott has a peg-leg. In fact, given how hammered most state lawmakers like to get before driving their cars, it’s the only part of this story that’s even remotely interesting to us at this point.

Ok..I am confused. Did he or did he not take a breathalyzer test? Has anyone alleged where or when he was drinking or what he drinking?
Thank goodness I am not a lawyer, but I assume there is some protocol or case law on drivers that are disabled in some fashion. Does anyone know this for sure?
I don’t know this guy and could care less about him or his case, but something does not seem right. The one thing I do know, for sure, is that at this level of politics he could easily have been set up…and if you don’t believe that you are naïve.
Word on the street, he was driving around looking for an ass kicking contest. And for the record he was not berating the deputies, he was simply screaming, “bring me the white whale”!!
especially when the former Senator from that same seat is the challenger in the primary….who also happens to be a lawyer that has done some criminal work and knows law enforcement…I noticed FITS hasn’t mentioned this little detail
I think the “protocol” that Sen. Hop-along assumed was that the cops would give him a pat on the back and send him on his way. That’s what he — and we — have come to expect “at this level of politics.” Just when it appears that the good ol’ boy system has given away to equal justice, we get a nut like Penny who starts suggesting a conspirance exists to bring down this great … uh, freshman … senator.
Oh, Penny - don’t play the naivete card… something tells me you are a Summerville native - maybe a local prep school grad even. I know you’ve seen Scott and his political allies on county council and in the town prosecutor’s office so drunk they all but pist on they-selves. Stop worrying about who signs your paycheck and examine your own conscience.
I’m no Ray Nash fan. I hope my old friend LC is the next sheriff down there in Dorchester. But, the idea that Ray Nash would have to set Randy Scott up to make a DUI arrest on him is pre-posterous. Word is that the Summerville Police Department (owned and operated by the Town Prosecutor whose tryin’ fer a promotion) has had to ferry the besotted Senator home to his worried wife more than once in the past.
Reese Joye is a fine lawyer, but he is a political neophyte. If he digs deep enough into the Byzantine morass that is Dorchester County politics, he will be in fer quite an education. Scott’s biggest mistake so far has been to hire Joye who knows not where the bodies are buried and has no leverage on anyone. Chris Murphy or Robbie Robbins probably could have had the case dismissed before the Post n’ Courier even got wind of it. Reese’s chest-thumpin’ has only made it much worse - when the world sees the video, it may be all over for Randy (which is a shame because Mike Rose ain’t no angel his ownself).
I am reserving my remarks on the validity of this case, of course, no one is paying me to take one side or another in Scott’s political race, so it is easy to be silent.
But, there is good reason to be silent. First, Joye is a respected attorney on DUIs especially, and he would not risk his reputation going so far out a limb in defense of a client without some reason. If his client was nailed, we would be reading, “unavailable for comment.”
That said, I find it hard to believe that a Sheriff up for re-election would make such an arrest of a known political opponent unless he really had something concrete on the guy.
In other words, both sides have a lot to lose by overplaying their hands. Let’s see what shakes out as far as facts in the next couple of days. Hopefully some news outlet is pressing for the video on the road and in the datamaster room. That would help clear things up.
That of course, is the benefit of not having a dog in this fight. I can’t fault anyone for doing what they are paid to do in pushing this incident, but know, if the incident actually turns out to be politically motivated, oh my. The CIA calls the coming storm “blowback.”
Also, I won’t throw any stones, as I live in a glass house.
I don’t want deputies waiting for me outside the Noisy Oyster, and I don’t want some pissed off state senator sicking the SCHP on me as I drive away from that watering hole either. Something to think about as one fires up the car in the Vista.
I also note, that IF, and stress IF, the senator showed his ass during the process, that is the biggest mistake he made. Being rude to a working cop, even if that cop is wrong, is just pretty damn stupid. There is a time and place to show how stupid or wrong the cop is, but that time is not on the roadside or the statioh house.

Hey Heidi; whats the difference between an obviously impared senator with a GED and a coke snortin state treas. with a college degree? You make it sound like a GED makes a person a second class citizen. Is this so?

Just … this tenth-grade dropout with a GED is graduating with a Master’s degree in two weeks, with a healthy list of honors, conference papers and publications. It just goes to show how stupid us GED-holders can be.

I have known Randy Botten for 7 years. He is an honorable man. I know him to be Competent, Fair, and not a petty man.
I say with confidence that any accusation that SGT Randy Botten was motivated by anything other than performing the job we pay him to do is outrageous, and ignorant.
Just who was the woman in the car with Randy as they sat in the dark in the BiLo parking lot??? Talking politics?

Why not Stop the car in the Parking lotof the Bi-lo(as you were watching the car for several minutes waiting for an order) and not letting an alleged drunk driver back on the road to endanger the public so you can video him?
