Text Messages From Uncle Sam?

LOL? NOT SO MUCH

FITSNews – April 11, 2008 – In the federal government’s latest effort to be as annoying and intrusive as possible, it’s apparently going to start sending us text messages now. We’re not sure whether or not Uncle Sam will be using popular text-isms like “BRB,” “LOL,” or our personal favorite “KBU,” (kinky bondage underway) but here’s the deal:

The FCC has approved a new nationwide alert system that will send text messages to cell phones to alert Americans when an emergency, disaster, or attack occurs. Only three types of events will trigger the emergency text message, which will be sent by your carrier.

This is a good idea, though I am sure it will be completely ignored by many. The text messages will be sent for the following reasons: there is a terrorist or other attack that threatens the safety or health of Americans; an imminent or on-going natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or tornado; or an Amber alert.

Actually, the government sending text messages out to people who didn’t ask for them is not a good idea. Sure, today it’s reserved for fire and brimstone moments, but in no time they’re going to be using this thing to blast out tax bill reminders, National Park coupons or sending you the e-Harmony profile of with Jerry, associate director of special projects at the Department of Who Cares. He’s 42, wears bow ties and suspenders and still lives with his mother, but damn if he’s not a looker, people.

I called verizon & told them I wanted to Opt-Out. They put me on their no solicitation list and said I would not receive any of the notifications from the FCC once it goes into affect. Verizon told me the FCC will send the notifications to them and they will forward them to their customers. I told them I use my cell as my alarm clock and I don’t want it going off at all hours of the night for weather alerts & amber alerts. Thats what the internet, radio & TV is for. And if we’re begin nuked, I’m dead anyway. I guess its to give me time to get dressed for it.
