Outrageous Behavior
WHAT IN THE HELL ARE S.C. LAWMAKERS THINKING?
FITSNews - April 9, 2008 - Over the past year, we’ve called the men and women who serve in South Carolina’s General Ass-embly “morons,” “ass-clowns,” “communists,” “mouth-breathers,” “numbnuts,” “retards” and “dipsh*ts” (among other things).
Well, today we’re apologizing for everything … it turns out we were giving them way too much credit.
How else can one explain what happened yesterday in the brainless void known as the South Carolina State House? Seriously, these idiots have turned f*cking up into an art form over the past two centuries, but this time they’ve truly “done gone and outdid demselves,” to borrow a popular phrase from their own vernacular.
We’ll start with the South Carolina Senate, which decided yesterday to cut $10 million worth of tourism advertising and $7 million in economic development money from the state budget so that it could keep $18.5 million in a legislative slush fund that doles out money for worthless pork barrel projects.
Of course that outright display of contempt for the best interests of the taxpayers was downright commendable compared to what the S.C. House of Representatives did …
One day after state revenues were downgraded by $90 million, the House decided to give itself a nice little backdoor pay raise yesterday as part of a bill which will add another $2.4 billion to the unfunded liability of our state retirement system.
But what’s even more egregious than legislators sweetening their retirement packages at a time when funds are being drained away from tourism and economic development needs is the cowardly way the House accomplished its self-serving boondoggle.
Put simply, they did it precisely the way you’d expect a bunch of worthless pussies to do it - anonymously.
Despite the best efforts of Rep. Gary Simrill and several of his conservative allies in the House (Reps. Nathan Ballentine, Mick Mulvaney and Eric Bedingfield, to name a few) Speaker Bobby Harrell unilaterally steamrolled parliamentary procedure and dictated that House members were going to pass this controversial measure on a “voice vote.”
For those of you unfamiliar with the daily evasion of responsibility that your government perpetrates using these seemingly innocuous procedural terms, Harrell’s insistence on a “voice vote” meant there would be no public record of who voted “Aye” and who voted “Nay” to slip themselves a little extra cash while the rest of the state suffers - and suffers as a direct result of their recently-concluded three-year spending orgy, lest we forget.
In fact, just seconds before Speaker Harrell determined all by himself that a majority of the House of Representatives had shouted “Aye, give us our secret backdoor pay raises” as opposed to “Nay, we want to look out for the taxpayers for a change,” the exact same House of Representatives voted by a 3-to-1 margin (on the record this time) to keep alive an amendment that would have done away with this boondoggle.
Seriously, what a bunch of parliamentary pussies.
They took one vote with their names on it to make it look like they were standing up for your best interests, then they turned around literally seconds later and took another vote without their names on it to screw over your best interests and put your money in their pockets.
But hey, at least they got the fat new retirement benefits they wanted all along, right?
Seriously, people. This sh*t has got to stop.
We should never allow these people to run up another $2.4 billion we can’t pay for without at least making them put their damn names on it.

That is demoralizing. What’s the solution? I did write my senator and representative, following Cindi Ross Scope’s column.

What can we do at this point, other than bend over and grab out ankles ?
I’ve lost my will to live. (not really, but is sounds dramatic)

how can we find out how our senators voted?

Let’s congratulate the 58 House members who showed the cojones today to send that stupid bill back to committee. You should list them, FITS. And we should figure out who the 51 members are who voted against that.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
I know, I know. I’ve been watching too much HBO’s John Adams. It’s just so inspiring….until, of course, it goes off…then like most people, the outrage and frustration seems to just fizzle away until the next time the government poos on us.
If life is an event of cycles, isn’t it time for another revolution? I’m just sayin’….

Frankly, I don’t think we need to congratulate hardly anyone. The only reason that it was recommitted today was because sunshine was allowed into the process.
Any real congrats should go to those souls who voted for RECONSIDERATION yesterday (Tuesday) and were rebuffed.
But frankly, with so few people required to get a roll call vote, where were the leaders in the House? Leadership would’ve demanded that they stand up and ask for a roll call vote.

True, Scott.
I’d bet the list is fairly similar.

Its amazing that more Representatives were not told to be unavailable. Its hell when you have to vote in public.

Fitsnews,
Doesn’t the state constitution give legislators a right to a viva voce vote (roll call recorded by the clerk of the body) on any matter. I know there was another time when Harrell wanted a unanimous voice vote and and i called his ass out on that one! As a former member of the House, i’m apalled at these clowns. Makes me feel justified in calling the emperor naked for 12 long years. Keep up the good work. Hopefully you can last longer than I did.

Hello all,
As a new comer to SC and Columbia and having at least visited 49 of our 50 wonderful US States I must say SC is a wonderful place. Generally people are quite friendly. I do have to agree with those here who see these acts as criminal. The way to stop this kind of criminal activity is to simple gather force, pic the battle and sue these people in Federal court. Thing is it is very dangerous to ones career and also costly so as to put one in the poor house.
I see such great heart in the people of SC on a daily basis but the government is a criminal enterprise and if they ever find me - please be assured they would wine and dine me into their camp. Please do band together - meet ups? - - and pic one of these players to sue in Federal Court - the idea we ‘common’ people are to weak or stupid to stop a ‘voice’ vote to hide the greed of our leadership needs to be turned around on them.
I hope you can do it.
