I am struck by some of the blindly hateful posts to this story. Most frightening is the assumption that the human heart has limited space for love...therefore those who care for an animal surely have no love left for their fellow human. This is proposterous.

1. Love all animals as they are God's beloved creatures, part of God's creation placed with great trust under our care.

Note: The "they're only dogs" attitude runs counter to loving the animals that are gifts of The Creator.

2. Personal reasponsibility is an extremely valued trait in a functional community. Being responsible for one's actions and caring for the innocent, including children and pets (not to make too close a comparison, there) is at at the core of being a good citizen.

Note: Responsible pet owners have their dogs spayed/neutered and would never drop all sense of responsibility to the pet in their care by dumping the animal, pregnant or otherwise, at a shelter.

3. Human beings have big enough hearts to love animals as well as less-fortunate human beings. Loving human beings and loving animals are not exclusive endeavors. Caring for a helpless, pregnant dog dumped in a high-kill shelter by her owners does not prevent a person from caring for human beings in need (the homeless man, the single mother...whomever).

4. Proud people do not stand for the abuse of the innocents before them. This includes animals. This especially includes our "Best Friends" (dogs).

Finally, shame on those of you masquerading as "conservatives" by bashing "liberal animal lovers" and making spiteful comments toward animals and those who shield them. True conservatives stand boldly to protect all of God's creation, and would never blindly wish harm upon an innocent inhabitant of this beautiful earth, be that inhabitant on 4 legs or 2.

Well, I never accused you all of being intelligent. Neither do I have the time to educate you. If you are curious do your own research. My objective has been completed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise. It sort of reminded me of practicing dribbling a basketball as a kid, except those basketballs can be unpredictable.

Some of you morons that have replied to this email - you probably don't know what unconditional love is. Well, its something that a beloved pet gives their owner and asks nothing in return, except being loved back unconditionally. This BS that some of you are talking about as "oh, they're just dogs" and "they lick their ____"; well, you certainly don't know what unconditional love is because you probably don't know how to love something!

Yes, I love animals and I believe that they were put here to give humans companionship, love, hope, faith, security, devotion - many more good things. Its also believed that they make sick people feel better, lower blood pressure in people and helps life be a little less stressful for many. I feel sorry for you idiots that make remarks like those above, but I guess you have the right to feel and say the things you do - just like Senator Williams dumping his pregnant dog and just like that moronic marine that hurled the puppy over the cliff. That make you feel the same way - its just a dog? People like you, although there is a supposed freedom of speech in this country, make me sick. I'm so happy that I'm surrounded by friends and family that loves animals like I do. Our pets make us happy.

And Senator Williams reply about dumping the dog for her own safety - what was she being "saved" from? Him dumping her somewhere where she and her puppies could potentially be killed was not in her best interest nor for her "own safety". I hope this article and the many responses to him, and others like him in a governmental position - those who are supposed to represent us - do not get re-elected. Shame on you Senator Williams and shame on all of you making those inhumane remarks.

Unfortunately Cuke I don't have any money left to support any of those type organizations, but in the interest of sustaining this blog commentary, I'm willing for you to enlighten me as to what HSUS and/or ASPCA have to do with the Senator. And the Marion County Humane Society too, if they have one. While I don't really care for politics - too many lies and too much maneuvering - I have visited a political blog after all and I never turn down the opportunity for new knowledge.

Well, truth be known Kyle, I know you are animal welfare and not animal rights by you admission to owning dogs. Why? Because animal right's folks view even pet ownership as slavery. I think you would do better supporting the ASPCA rather than the HSUS because of the differences you can now draw from our chat.

Furthermore, I don't believe we would have a story were it not for the Humane Society trying to politic at the Senator's expense. But, is the HSUS what you thought them to be? Or did they open up a metaphoric can of Alpo?

I haven't even posted my opinion about cows yet Cuke, and you are already asking me about vegetables? I'll wait until a vegetable issue blog is posted and then I will see if I can come up with some relevant opinion. Or perhaps you would like to come to dinner and we could discuss it. On second thought, my dogs probably wouldn't like you.

Kyle,
How about the really oppressed ones-the vegetables? Without an advocate, without rights.

Thank you People Eating Tasty Animals for pointing out something that is blatantly clear - that pets are property under the law. At one time, we had no laws to protect abused women and children either. But on to the point: SC state law State requires all animals adopted from a shelter, pound and/or rescue be spayed or neutered. People found guilty of violating the state law, a misdemeanor, upon conviction, can be fined $500 to $1,000 and/or sentenced to 30 to 180 days in jail.

I have spent my entire life as a social worker in this state and therefore I am aware that there are many ills which need to be addressed. As a compassionate person, my concern extends to dogs as well, who serve humanity as leaders of the blind, search and rescue dogs, police officers, aids to the disabled, therapists for autistic children, companions to the elderly, and so forth.

Your last question would be for whatever humane society you are referring to as I have no knowledge of the policies of any humane society.
