Barr To Announce Presidential Bid Next Week
LIBERTARIAN CANDIDATEÂ WILL ALSO GETÂ RON PAUL’S ENDORSEMENT, SOURCES SAY
FITSNews – March 31, 2008 – Feeding off of conservative discontent with Republican presidential nominee John McCain, former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr will announce a third party bid for the White House next week, sources tell FITSNews.
Barr, who will run as a Libertarian, is also slated to receive the the endorsement of Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the only Republican presidential candidate who has yet to cease campaign operations and jump on the McCain bandwagon.
Just last week, Paul threw more cold water on the notion of his supporters backing McCain, telling Newsweek, “I’m not going to tell them what to do, but I honestly can’t imagine any of them supporting him. That would be a tough sale.”
Barr, who represented Georgia’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 1995-2003, is perhaps best known for his role as a House Manager during impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton.
From the looks of it, Barr and Paul already seem to have something of a “mutual admiration society” going.Â
Last week, Barr specifically praised Paul’s campaign in discussing his own flirtation with the Presidency, telling the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his potential Libertarian bid for the White House would be an extension of the Ron Paul movement.
“Ron Paul tapped into a great deal of that dissatisfaction and that awareness. Unfortunately, working through the Republican party structure, it became impossible for him to really move forward with his movement. But we have to have ….a rallying point out there to harness that energy, that freedom in this election cycle,†Barr told the newspaper.

I guess if the GOP has been neglecting it’s base and forcing people
out the door they need somewhere to go. Democrats will love this two many of them won’t vote for Hillary or Obama. They were cross voting to keep the other out. This should prove interesting

I ***KNEW***!!! Ron Paul was a worm! A medical doctored worm! He wants to make sure we all get born, only to have us all killed when meeting up with international trigger-happy boaters, etc.
Does “mutual admiration society” involve sodomy?
…I’m not sayin’…I’m just sayin’…

I suppose Barr was waiting to see what was going to happen with the Ron Paul campaign before jumping into the race. However, this is after a many state LPs have had their conventions and have selected delegates for the LP National convention. The moderate Libertarians have been tied up in the Ron Paul campaign and have left the LP to the radicals who will make up a majority of the LP delegates at Denver. It will be interesting to see how everything pans out. This is a presidential year and our state convention has less than 1/2 the off year participants which I chalk up to the Ron Paul effect.

I hope that Bob Barr will announce and that the Libertarian Party will nominate him for President. There is a very large and growing number of Ron Paul supporters who will never vote for McCain or Hillary/Obama. They are activists and generous in donating both time and money to the cause of liberty and restoring the US Constitution. They need somone to rally with and I think Bob Barr would be an excellent person to do it. I know I will support him.

Barr was quite a drug warrior at one time, and pretty right wing until he left office. He was showing signs before leaving office of using the Constitution for guidance in policy matters, which IMO should always be done. I have read some of his wriitngs since, and he seems to have come to understand the drug war is unconstitutional on most points of at least the Bill of Rights.
If Barr can do that, anyone can. I have some respect for the man, and some for the LP, but they need to factor environmental issues more into their philosophy.

No offense intended for Barr or Congressman Paul, but seriously…. who cares!?!
Congressman Paul had a fun ride on the trail backed by anti-war money from the left. Nothing wrong with that. Just an opinion.
But when it came to that money actually showing up as votes…. they simply just were not there. The Radical Reformers failed to actually materialize as RADICAL VOTERS in any significant numbers. But you’ve still got to give the Congressman his kudos.
In this case it will actually benefit the Republicans in November, because ANYONE who is voting for either of these two public servants were not going to vote for McCain anyway. So at least they will not be voting for Osama, Obama, or Chelsea’s Mama.

OK, we have 4 years to make this work. Donate money, sweat equity and get the word out we will make a major change in 2012. Ron Paul and Bob Barr for President on the Libertarian Party tickey. Where is the Constitutional Party in all of this? We need to join forces and win the next one.

This will be a disaster for our country, for with a third party conservative in the race, so many unthinking republicans will vote for Barr (who cannot possibly win) that McCain may very well lose the election. Obama is not just a liberal.. he is a Marxist… a collectivist… a commie fergodssake! The four years he is in charge with a democrat congress will bring horrific changes in our freedoms that may never go away.
Do Libertarians really want to lose the freedoms we still have? Barr’s entry will accomplish just that! What a selfish egotistical thing to do… sacrificing our America to socialists just so he can make his point.
I agree with Libertarians about 90%, and I’d happily vote for one IF he ever had a chance to win. But in 2008 we need to AVOID a socialist president, and Barr will act only as a spoiler to assure the commies take over.
By dave on April 1st, 2008 at 2:27 am
i’m sure ron paul would never tell bob barr what to do, just like he wouldn’t tell anyone in favor of his own agenda whom to support. all he can do is give good advice, as he always is happy to do – and i can’t see that he is asking anyone to abandon his own campaign which would mean to weaken it, and give away his realistic chances to take back the republican party from the neocon hijackers. but he will welcome any honest support for his own campaign, any time.

Butt out you Idiot, it’s already going to be tough enough to keep either of the other two Idiots out of the White House.
By Hal of Indiana on April 1st, 2008 at 3:02 am
If Bob Barr runs as an independent, then that would put a Democratic into the White House. Can you imagine what would happen to our Country if one of those two dolts left remaining in the Democratic race were to be president?
Way to go Bob Barr and Ron Paul. Your self glorified zeal just might see Hillary and Bill, or Obama running the country.
Google “1992 presidential election” and see that Ross Perot pushed out HG Bush and put Bill Clinton into the White House. Wikipedia states Clinton got 43%. Bush and Perot together got 56%.
The Country did not want Clinton. Yet, we got him because of Perot. Any independent running for an office clearly knows that a Democrat will win.
By Harrypara on April 1st, 2008 at 4:13 am
A RINO who switched partys and wants to be the 2008 Ross Perot. He knows he doesn’t stand a chance of winning, but just wants to draw votes away from McCain and make sure Dems win the election.

I think this is great, and I will support Bob. McCain is drunk on his defacto status as lib republican in waiting… He may sober up and realize his finger in the eye to the base is what will de-flower his white, puffy, old, fat, cheeks of arogance… Let the games begin. I was wondering why no ‘real’ republican had done this before and I will be happy to voter Barr.

He’ll have to beat Wayne Root to secure the Libertarian nomination first. Root has won just about every straw poll and primary for the Libertarian Party so far.
But it will be an interesting race for the LP all the way up til the convention in late May in Denver, for sure.

Let’s see Paul-Barr on the 2008 LP ticket. (Yes, he can be drafted, even if he doesn’t campaign for it.) Beats the Marxist-Muslim mole Obama or the lying, unstable warmonger McCain. And for all you Republicans who support McCain, remember that he made dozens of propaganda videos in Hanoi and they will come out once he’s nominated. You think he’s going to win when tapes of him admitting to war crimes – bombing schools and hospitals and who knows what else – are being played 24/7 in every venue imaginable? Can you spell swiftboat? And that’s if he doesn’t stroke out or punch somebody before election day. He’s eminently capable of either at any moment.
BTW, what’s the cost of living like in New Zealand?
By Mike McHugh Front Royal on April 1st, 2008 at 7:46 am
The ONLY utility in Barr running would be to spank McCain and make him lose. There is no way Barr can actully win. Those who vote for Barr will be agreeing with those who say that we will be better off with Obama because Republicans will find their principles and fight Obama in ways they will not fight McCain, just as they did not fight Bush – - which cost them dearly. The best thing Barr could do is threaten to run unless McCain put constitutional and conservative promises in writing much like Gingrich’s Contract with America. If he does, not then Barr should run but he will do more good for the country by giving McCain a chance to put his promises in WRITING.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face…That is exactly what you will be doing if you vote for Bob Barr. You may not like McCain, but it is either him or Obama. The next president will send 2 or 3 justices to the Supreme Court, who serve for life. If that president is Obama or Clinton, the US will have a generation of increasing socialism and socialized medicine, or longer. It is indeed a selfish thing for Barr to run in the LP. He could be much more effective by backing McCain and getting an influential position in his administration. Who remembers the name of the last man who ran for President in the Libertarian Party?
By CLS on April 1st, 2008 at 9:43 am
Where does Barr stand on building the fence NOW? And what is his position on granting amnesty to the illegal invaders who are taking over our country? These issues are uppermost in the minds of conservative Republicans, who are adamantly opposed to McCain.
By TuckertheCarlson on April 1st, 2008 at 9:45 am
Mike McHugh…lol…the guy who took our hard-earned RP donations to mess up almost every state delegate/petitions signature effort he touched.
Anyway…Look. Who gives a rip about what a Bob Barr run may or may not do to the other three globalist traitors who are running?
I wish you people would VOTE ON PRINCIPLE for a change. This nonsense of figuring out who to vote for based on what it may do to the other career scumbags is why this country is in so much trouble.
Barr may not be perfect, but a Barr-Paul or Paul-Barr ticket running as INDEPENDENTS and getting the endorsement of all the third parties COULD ACTUALLY WIN. People are so fed up with both parties right now that Mickey Mouse with a few million bucks would be inaugurated.

The Libertarian Party is sort of a political free-for-all, isn’t it ?? Barr needs to articulate why he went to the Libertarians instead of the Conservative Party.. He was showing signs of helping rescue the Republicans at one time, but who knows what he is thinking now?? What do his platform and agenda mean ?? He better get busy if he is serious about getting the word out.. Or, is this just a sour-grapes campaign to fracture the Republican vote ??
By Dave on April 1st, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Well, it’s either the Marxist Obama, the Communist Hillary, or the socialist McCain. Unless, Mr. Barr does run. We need someone who is actually a conservative to vote for. Conservatism can win elections! It just needs a real leader. You McCainiacs keep warning us that we’ll “split the vote” and we’ll get Obama, well, McCain is just as bad or worse than Obama. McCain is a wolf in sheep’s clothing!

Mike, we already have a document to protect us FROM the government that John McCain took an oath to uphold. It’s called the Constitution!!! McCain has already violated this several times! He’d sign anything to appease us just to get elected and then go about his fascist ways! If the Constitution doesn’t mean anything to him why would any other document? The LP has every right to run whomever we care to run! If the neo cons don’t like it that’s too damn bad! McCain is just as bad a candidate as Obama and Clinton! Bob Barr would be an exceptional candidate!

All of you idiots that complain about Barr running have forgot one thing, Ralph Nader. Nader is also running and garners about 2-3 million people in the general election. Those votes are generally pulled away from the Dems. This is terrific for those who believe themselves to be disenfranchised. Barr should run and I, as a Ron Paul supporter/voter, will vote for him.

Announced Libertarian candidate Dr. Mary Ruwart is just as likely to get (maybe more likely) Ron Paul’s endorsement. However, If I were a betting man (I am not) I would not expect an official endorsement from Ron Paul any time soon. If Dr. Paul were to endorse a Libertarian Party candidate, it would not happen until after the LP convention nominates a presidential candidate, and probably not even until after the Republican convention in early September.
Barr is not a shoe-in by any stretch. Libertarians are very particular about their presidential candidate. Aaron Russo, god rest his soul, was denied the LP nomination in part because of his non-libertarian views on the environment. Barr would likely have the same fate, as he hasn’t made the full transition from conservatism to libertarianism.
Mary Ruwart, has no such difficulties. She is the real deal full fledged libertarian. I support her completely.

What all of you seem to be missing is that John McCain is the very worst to vote for because he is as liberal and more so than either Obama or Clinton. If he gets into office then as the leader of the Republican Party he will be able to arm twist the Republicans to keep them in line and the Democrats will be happy to go along with his liberal agenda. With a Democrat in the White House the Republicans then can put up a fight against them without the appearance of betraying party loyalty.

I will vote for the candidate who will persuade one Congressman and/or Senator to sponsor the Civil Rights Act for Equal Educational Opportunity. This will require the states to equitably fund the education of children in public and non-public schools, while respecting the liberty of schools in hiring and provision of services. All of society rests upon education. As long as bureaucrats have a monopoly on education, they will control all levels of government; local, county, state and federal. School choice will break this monopoly and the enormous destruction this has brought upon us.

When I put my blood, sweat, tears, and money into a candidate, I vote for them even if it means writing them in. When I said that I would stand behind Ron Paul ’til the end I meant it… the very end. It’s not throwing away a vote as some people like to tell me, It’s honoring my word, and voting for who I believe can do the most good for this country. We are (and have been) spiraling towards Socialism/Communism/Globalism and McCain, Clinton, and Obama will only take us further sown that road if not all the way.
Do your research and find out how this nation was meant to run (Republic) also check the reasons why The Roman Republic fell and you’ll see it’s exactly the same reasons this nation is also failing/falling. Soon it will be too late to turn back and you will have only yourself to blame because you voted “for the guy that could win” OR “the first woman” or “the first african-american” or “so this one couldn’t win” or whatever… not because you did your research and not because you voted for who would truly help this once great nation without taking away our freedoms or scaring us into handing them over.

I never cared for Barr because he’s always been a social conservative. I know he has changed alot since then though. But The Libertarian Party would be fools not to nominate him.
Barr automatically has credibility in the media and has a large following among small government conservatives. He has the potential to actually have an impact and bring alot of voters into The Libertarian Party.
Even though he’s not perfect on the issues , he’s in the party’s best interest. And with a Ron Paul endorsement thats even more reason to nominate him. He’s the next best thing to Ron Paul. I really doubt Paul would consider endorsing anyone else.

McCain is having trouble even drawing a crowd without a major managerial job being done. He is an OLD, OLD man, makes major blunders almost daily now. He’s definely not a conservative and WOULDN’T govern as one if by miracle he got elected. He deserves to lose.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s7kEb6Osqc&feature=related
A BOB BARR-MIKE GRAVEL ticket could very well be the only serious challenge to a Obama/Clinton term. At the very least it would deny the socialists any claims of a mandate. Bill Clinton never received over 50% so he had to go along with the GOP to govern. No one of these socialists (Obama, Clinton & yes McCain) will receive a landslide MANDATE, so will be unable to push through their full agenda.
Look for Bob Barr to also accept the Constitutional Party’s blessings the end of this month. Also the America First Partys later this Spring. With the LP backing this would be literally thousands of activists added to the tens of thousands of conservatives, independents and moderate activists energized by this fusion campaign, everyone of them working toward a credible goal ! YES, Unite almost all liberty lovers in an all out campaign against the common enemies to our Constitutional Republic and all those who love her !
End the neo-con rape of America. Viva La R(3VOl)ution.
A BARR-GRAVEL ticket would simple be GREAT in 2008 !

There is NO Republican candidate in this election. McCain is just another Democrat who has a different slant on the war in Iraq. He is soft spoken, “nice” but a “fool”!!! I’d rather see Obama or Hillary run this country into the ground than to give the GOP a black eye with another maverick Republican President, like Bush.
With Barr there would be hope for those of us who find none in Obaba, Clinton or Mc Cain. If Barr makes a good choice in his running mate, he may succeed where other Independents have failed in the past.
The true GOP conservatives have no current representation in this country. If things continue as they are headed now the GOP will fade into obscurity and we’ll have a one party government which has been the plan by big business for many years now. Hopefully I won’t live long enough to say “I told you so”.

If the GP/Nader tipped it in 2000, then the LP/Barr can tip it in 2008. The issue isn’t the third parties. It’s the Ds and Rs themselves. They have both adopted welfare and warfare as their standard fare. Blaming third parties for the failures of Ds and Rs is ridiculous.
Since the Greens are largely socialists, that leaves one choice — the LP nominee whoever he or she may be.
By steve on April 2nd, 2008 at 12:17 pm
The Republican Party, right now, is where the Democratic party was 20 years ago. The Democrats are now somewhere left of Lenin. The bottom line is the RNC and the DNC totally control the electoral process in this country. I’m sure Hugo Chavez is admiring the way we the people have allowed our elitists to get away with this!
There is no real choice – Hillary’s a liar (Bullets over Bosnia), Obama is a liar (”…only 2008 candidate to support Feingold’s bill…”, ahem McCain-Feingold) and McCain is only a war veteran and former POW. There are a whole hell of a lot of people with those qualifications!
What all 3 agree on is the giving away of America to any illegal immigrant and preventing the desirable legal immigrants from citizenship.
Maybe, history of 232 years ago needs repeating.

The3 Republicans deserve everything that will happen to them, if Barr runs as a Libertarian.Especially as they rejected the first option, of Ron Paul, in the Primary process. And, yes, I agree with 99% of the comments posted above. Now all Barr needs do, is convince each of the other Libertarian president candidates to either step aside and support Barr, or endorse Barr, in hope of a fusion ticket ( themself + Barr), for President & VP. And, with 8 ( now) declared Libertarian candidates, we may finally get answers to the relevant question: Shall we have a covernment, that adheres to the US Constitution and Bill of Rights ( Libertarians, Constitution, Conservative, free thinkers, etc) vs the socialist/ Statist agenda of Obama, Clinton & McCain ( and Bush)?
Bob Barr; Ron Paul;Mike Gravel;Mike Jingozian;Christine Smith;Steve Kubby; George D.Phillies;Wayne Root, are the deciders, among themselves. The greater membership of the Libertarian Party will be the other division Point, in early May. Good luck to Bob Barr.

I have the argument over and over that by voting for so and so, you guarantee the other side a victory.
It’s really quite simple for me. Vote my conscience.
I may die before a candidate that represents my beliefs gets in office, but at least I won’t have to explain how I compromised myself each election to ‘keep the other guy’ from winning.

We’ll get wherever we are headed a whole lot quicker. As for me I’m tired of voting against someone. The Socialists and Communists can take the country, but they’ll never take me. Good luck Bobb.

So we have a choice between a liberal warmonger (McCain) and a liberal who wants out of Iraq (Obama)? Thanks, but no thanks. We believe in the principles of liberty this nation was founded on, and will happily vote for Ron Paul or Bob Barr.
When will the ‘GOPLoyalists’ understand that that mindset reduces voting to little more than cheering for your favorite team? That’s fine for football, but moronic for selecting our nation’s leadership. The GOP has not been ‘loyal’ to our Constitution, to our liberties, or to their own promises, so they do not deserve automatic loyalty in return.
Oh, and as far as the all-powerful “but McCain will appoint conservative justices argument,” I’d ask you to look over this piece: http://www.amconmag.com/2008/2008_03_10/article2.html

I am not gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. I don’t smoke anything legal or illegal. I don’t use any recreational drugs unless you count some occassional alcohol. I wouldn’t die if people told me I couldn’t pull the occassional slot machine handle. I’m not a Muslim or a Jew.
However, I take the words of Martin Niemoller seriously. He was the German priest who expressed regret after WW II when he was released from a prison camp that he did not speak out when the government came to take away all the various groups of people they had targetted. He said that when they came to take him away, there was nobody left to speak up for him.
I don’t intend on watching idly as our government restricts individual freedoms, even if they do not affect me. THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY IS THE PARTY INTERESTED IN PROTECTING INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM.
Just because your vote doesn’t have a significant chance of causing the recipient to win, doesn’t mean your vote was wasted. In fact, votes cast for someone who doesn’t have a CHANCE of winning carry more weight in some respects. Consider the fact that Ron Paul is still getting in the neighborhood of 8% of the GOP primary vote. Considering all the factors in play, it means the people that vote(d) for Ron Paul are making a statement. They, like me, would not have voted for a Republicrat. They saw someone who respected the Constitution, and individual liberties. They understood he was the only candidate who looked at the Bill of Rights like they did and more importantly, like the founding fathers did. (To me, Ron Paul is a Libertarian regardless of his registered party)
Now since it is highly doubtful Ron Paul will be on the General Election ballot, it is time for those people to vote Libertarian and a bunch of others to join them.
You see… this election isn’t about who wins — it’s about who loses. You do if you vote for four more years of the same BS — If you say to the entrenched political interests that its okay for them to steal life liberty and property. You Lose!
If instead, you vote for freedom — for the LP — you will let others who are a bit more of a follower, who are a bit less informed, who are a bit more controlled by fear, that it is okay to join the ranks of the disgruntled. And when they start voting LIbertarian, more will follow and before you know it, the whole thing will have snowballed into the first Libertarian President and this country will be on a new path of freedom for all.
So whether the nominee is Bob Barr, Wayne Allyn Root, George Phillies, Mary Ruwart or any of the others running, I will be voting for freedom — I will be voting for the LP nominee. PERIOD. (unless by some strange turn of events Imperato wins the nomination which I highly doubt would happen)
For the record, I am an undecided delegate to the LNC convention.

All you people whining about Barr possibly running make me laugh. There is very little difference between Obama, Clinton, or McCain. I couldn’t in good conscience vote for either of the CFR socialists or CFR fascist. The logic that you present that I should vote against my principles and vote for someone who is opposed to my principles just to ensure the candidate of another party doesn’t win is insane! The lesser of two evils is still evil. Why is this concept so hard for you to grasp? Instead of whining maybe you should be promoting Instant Runoff Voting. In your 1992 example, If you assume all Perot voters would have put Bush as a second choice, then there would have been a different outcome. If McCain loses as I think he will, it’s because the Republican party failed to have a real conservative as it’s nominee.

Right on Brian! There is intelligent life out there. The socialists have already won the presidential race. How about letting McCain pick either Obama or Hillary for his running mate and be done with it.
We need a true leader with integrity, common sense, and the courage to stand up for what is right. I don’t know anything about Barr yet, but I believe it is my patriotic duty to put forth the effort to investigate the man and decide if he is the leader we are lacking. I can’t in good conscious give my vote to any of Barrack, Hillary, or John.
