OBAMA’S BIG SPEECH ON RACE IGNITES DEBATE

FITSNews - March 19, 2008 - Since some much less-popular bloggers are whining that our website didn’t provide minute-by-minute coverage of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s big “Race Speech” yesterday, we figured we’d throw in our two cents …

First of all, homeboy can give a speech. When it comes to sheer oratorical ability, we think it’s pretty obvious by now that no one in American politics can touch this guy. Seriously, Obama could be talking about the importance of brushing your teeth or getting your car oil changed and make you feel part of a revolutionary crusade destined to change the course of humanity.

Second, we agree with pretty much everything he said on the subject, and the fact that his speech made it clear that racism is a problem shared by both blacks and whites in both parties is a critical, and oft-overlooked acknowledgment.

Third, the fact that Obama was giving the speech for the sole purpose of mitigating a political crisis doesn’t bother us like it does some people. We don’t think the points he made are any more or any less valid because they’re part of a larger damage control effort stemming from controversial comments made recently by his insane, race-baiting pastor.

A bunch of Republicans are salivating over the prospect of nailing Obama to the wall over these comments, but we’re mature enough to recognize that he’s not the one who actually made them.

But just as Obama’s points regarding race are worth considering independent of the political controversy that necessitated them, the fact that he’s 100% right on this issue (not to mention ideally positioned to bring it up) doesn’t mean that he’s not 100% wrong on everything else he stands for.

Somebody a lot smarter than us once said that we should judge people not by the color of their skin, but rather the “content of their character.” Similarly, in politics, we should judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the merits of their ideas.

Take Charleston County Council Chairman Tim Scott, for example, who is probably more fiscally conservative than Mark Sanford and more socially conservative than Mike Huckabee. Not only that, he loves to eat at Cracker Barrel, people. Which is known for living up to its name in terms of the color of its dinner guests.

Bottom line? Anybody who makes a decision on who they’re voting for - or for that matter who they talk to, invite into their homes, give a scholarship to, sell a car to, hire for a marketing position, listen to on the car radio, or any of a million other things - is limiting their universe. And limiting themselves.

Obama’s speech “A More Perfect Union” was just brilliant. Most impressive was his ability stand with one foot in his White heritage and the other in his Black heritage and speak frankly about race in a way neither a Black or White man ever could.

Even more impressive for me, is that after 8 years with a slack-jawed dufus in the Whitehouse, we can look forward to not only a President that can string a 6 word sentence together without drooling on himself, but he can actually WRITE such an elequent speech.

That’s right - Obama wrote that speech he gave. By Himself. This speech, being lauded over by both critics and pundits alike as “Historical”, was written by Senator Obama. He gets it. Without being told what to say and think by polls and advisors - he really gets it.

The man is impressive and uniquely qualified to lead our country in these Dark times.

jimmy,
what does he stand for specifically that you support? this guy, in the end, will be seen as even slicker than slick willie. you watch. he is no different. he is just a marvelous actor and understands that ability, plus the right looking family, is all he needs.

Obama is acting like he is all races to all people and that he is above all of this–and the American people are going to give him a pass because they want him to be above it.

So Joe can complain all he wants to that Obama is slick, but no one is going to listen except Joe’s little circle. Why should we be shocked by the allegation that a politician is slick?

“I am shocked–shocked that there is gambling going on at Rick’s!”

Hi!

About Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton … have you reacted to this … ?

Now that Mr. Barone –of U.S. News & World Report– has discussed whether Puerto Rico’s “all-or-nothing” 63 Delegate Primary might be incredibly decisive in determining the outcome of the primary, will you comment on this related issue that may well impact the result of the PR Primary?

Will you discuss the person often described as the “French Obama” (for better or worse… she even endorsed Obama on her recent trip to America! :|).

Segolene Royal dans Harvard: Endorses independence for the U.S. territory of the United States, Puerto Rico?!
Have you seen this about the French Presidential hopeful, Segolene Royal, which seems to have appeared, among other places, in a page associated to the French ultra-prestigious newspaper, Le Monde Diplomatique?

Will you comment on it to offer a more balanced perspective as well as the <> and facinanting analysis that only you know how to offer?
