Ravenel Sentencing Set For Today
FORMER STATE TREASURER, CO-DEFENDANT TOÂ APPEAR BEFOREÂ FEDERAL JUDGE THIS AFTERNOONÂ
FITSNews – March 14, 2008 – Almost nine months after a cocaine-related arrest derailed his promising political career, former State Treasurer Thomas Ravenel will face the music today. Ravenel and his co-defendent, Michael Miller, will appear before a federal judge in Columbia at 1 p.m. this afternoon to receive their sentences. The Charleston developer has already pled guilty to one count of conspiring to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute, and has cooperated with authorities since his June indictment. From the Post & Courier:
Previous court filings list the advisory sentencing guideline for Ravenel at 10 to 16 months before any departures or variances are considered. He also faces the possibility of a significant fine.
Ravenel’s indictment and subsequent resignation from office restored control of the powerful S.C. Budget & Control Board to the State Legislature, which promptly elected one of its own to fill his seat. One respected Palmetto fiscal conservative has termed Ravenel’s fall as “the day the music died.”
In the interest of full disclosure, FITSNews‘ founding editor Sic Willie was one of Ravenel’s advisors during his successful 2006 campaign for Treasurer.

A new genre of music is about to crank up, though. And those “one of its own” @$#^%%@’s are going to be tune-less — and hopefully jobless.

But we might ought to hedge our collective bets…in case it all goes under the proverbial rug. As in, ‘Yes, Virginia, there is a purgatory.”
The Redneck Mafia Reign of Terror is it.
