U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENATIVES CLOSING ITS DOORS TO DEBATE EAVESDROPPING BILL
FITSNews - March 13, 2008 - Somewhere, George Orwell must be smiling.
The British author, whose “Big Brother Is Watching You” catchphrase catapulted the anti-totalitarian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four to international acclaim, would have to appreciate the irony of what the U.S. House of Representatives decided to do today. From the AP:
House Democratic leaders agreed Thursday to a rare closed-door session — the first in 25 years — to debate surveillance legislation.
Republicans requested privacy for “an honest debate” on the new Democratic eavesdropping bill that is opposed by the White House and most Republicans in Congress.
An honest debate? In our nation’s capital? Yeah right. But that’s not the point here. The point is that the government we pay for - which is supposed to conduct our business out in the open - is shutting its doors to the public to debate a bill that’s all about spying on us. That’s what we call “a profound statement on democracy.” Profoundly sh*tty.
