Behold, The Ass Peach
WE’VE BEEN ON THE ROAD TODAY, PEOPLE
FITSNews – March 13, 2008 – Every once in awhile, the jerk who runs this website lets us out of our cubicles long enough to hit the road and enjoy the splendid beauty that is South Carolina. “Splendid beauty” like the Gaffney, S.C. “Ass Peach,” for example, which is famous the world ’round for its uncanny resemblance to the human derriere. How did the “Ass Peach” come to be, you may ask? Well, from its official website:
It began late one night when the staff of the Gaffney Board of Public Works was working way too late. A water study had pointed out that the town needed a new elevated water storage tank and the staff was wondering over ways to get Uncle Sam to pay for it.
The “Peachiod (sic) King” Mr. Dick Crater, who at the time was Board Manager, said the immortal words that inspired a town, “Let’s build it in the shape of a Peach!” Slowly the idea grew and captured the imagination of the Board members and denizens of the town. Soon, the project started coming together. Federal funds were acquired from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the South Carolina Appalachian Council of Governments.
You know, we’re gonna go out on a limb here and guess that “Uncle Sam” probably took it up the peach … err, ass … on this one. Any story that starts with “It began late one night when the staff of the Gaffney Board of Public Works was working way too late …” can’t end well for the taxpayers. The good news, though, is that we now have a giant peach that looks like a human ass adorning the roadside of one of South Carolina’s busiest Interstate highways. Rock on, South Carolina!
