SHADY WEBSITE THROWS IN TOWEL AFTER SPREADING BAUER COCAINE RUMOR

FITSNews - March 12, 2008 - Two professional journalists moonlighting as anonymous bloggers discontinued their website last night after they were caught spreading a rumor that South Carolina’s Lieutenant Governor had a cocaine problem. Journalists Corey Hutchins and Wes Wolfe, who write professionally for the Columbia City Paper and The (Columbia S.C.) Free Times, were exposed by one of their own sources yesterday afternoon as the authors of the blog Sunny Places Shady People, which routinely criticizes conservative political candidates and organizations here in South Carolina.

In the website’s self-described “swan song,” Hutchins and Wolfe apologized for posting a controversial comment on our website yesterday stating that Lt. Gov. André Bauer “has a skeet problem” and that “his opponent would be all over that like white on, well, cocaine.”

Hey, we’ve been wrong about a lot of things before, but nothing to the degree about what we posted on FITSnews about Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. From the intense defense of Bauer by friends of his, and threats of a lawsuit, we’re pretty certain that what we were told over drinks a couple times is complete bullshit …

We’re totally, and completely sorry to the lieutenant governor, his friends and family.

And, trust us on this, we have some pretty nasty phone calls to make to the people who lied to us.

And, actually, consider this our swan song. It’s been fun, but, seriously, we don’t need the headaches that come from speaking our minds, or passing along everything we hear over a couple bourbons. Maybe someone else will take up the banner, but it ain’t going to be us.

Guys, guys … this new media stuff isn’t all that tricky. You print what you know to be true and then you stand by the evidence you’ve been provided. That way when people sue you (editor’s note: we’ve been sued now almost a dozen times), you can sit across a big oak table from those people, slide what’cha got across that big oak table and ask then them very politely if they like apples. We figured since you guys were “professional” journalists, you’d understand that.

I have contributed to that Web site a few times in the same capacity that I have contributed to FITSnews. I did not create, nor do I run the blog in question. I’d say your source on this one is misguided. I did not post any rumor that South Carolina’s llieutenant governor had a cocaine problem and the accusation that I did is patently false.

It is re-freshing that when Harden Gervais made a mistake, they took the high road, admitted their error, apologized in an apparent sincere manner and imposed on themselves a penalty. Our Supreme Court and some other politicians could learn from this example.

High road my ass, see a law suit based just on the admission alone…get ready for some medicine boys, you may want to put that apology into writing and send to Lt. Gov’s office begging to hold on to your KIA.

After they got caught. How noble.

I spoke with the Lt. Governor today and he was not excited about this. He is in public life and he understands how things get passed around even though there is no basis in fact.

He bears no grudges, and looks forward to continuing his service to the people of SC.

who cares about cocaine, have you seen his new smart car!!! It’s only one of two I’ve seen in the entire state… Our Lt. Gov is either trying to save gas, or be trendy..

A Vast Left Wing Conspiracy! The MSM would be all over this if it were about a Democrat. There is no longer a place in America for the Newsmedia as such. They can no longer be non partisan. They all have biases and therein lies the problem. The newsmedia like corrupt politicians have no standards or values they are vile despicable individuals who need to go to work for a living. Unfortunately they make Larry Flint look like the savior.

In the Greenville City Paper, Hutchins wrote about Ravenel, “He tooled around with buddy Andre Bauer.” Can we assume that is a made up statement as well?

Besides these bloggers making this up, is Fit’s News joining the blogisphere bull with…”editor’s note: we’ve been sued now almost a dozen times.”

This of course would all be public record but i guess documentation is something you bloggers don’t really need to worry about.
