S.C. CHIEF JUSTICE CALLED OUT FOR SALARY REPORT

FITSNews – March 6, 2008 – We’re not cool enough to be on the S.C. Policy Council’s “Insider” mailing list, but it turns out Sic Willie’s skill with the ladies was sufficient to procure a copy of the organization’s latest newsletter, which basically rips S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal for her proposal to give everybody in state government a whopping pay raise, a story which broke exclusively here on FITSNews a month ago.

“Government spending is growing 20 times faster than the ability of the average taxpayer to pay for it,” the newsletter notes. “State income levels and job growth are stagnant. There is a pending economic recession. Unemployment is rising. And yet seven state lawmakers decided this is the perfect time to give top state officials an enormous pay raise … Chief Justice Jean Toal chaired the seven-member committee that recently produced the state salary report.”

Diggity. While we haven’t settled on a floral theme to cover her office with yet, let it be known that we are officially in love with new Policy Council President Ashley Landess. In addition to being one of a handful of people in South Carolina with the guts to call out Chief Justice Toal, she also penned a brilliant opinion piece in La Socialista this week detailing the problems with our state’s ass-backward Ports Authority.
