The Post And Courier Forgot Something
SPEAKER’S POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE LEFT OUT OF FUNDRAISING STORY
FITSNews – February 26, 2008 – You know, for a second there we felt a couple of “awwww, he’s so sweet” tears welling up in our eyes when we read this morning’s Charleston Post and Courier story on the raging battle between Gov. Mark Sanford and his legislative antagonists. Specifically, we had to sent one of our interns on “hankie patrol” when we read this part about Speaker Bobby Harrell:
For years, Bobby Harrell has done as little political fundraising as possible — usually just a letter to past donors, maybe a casual picnic for supporters at $25 a family.
In a state Legislature in which half the members often run unopposed, and powerful lawmakers such as Harrell rarely face a serious challenge, that has always been enough.
Not to take the Lord’s name in vain or anything but Jesus H. Christ, people. What a load of bullsh*t. Seriously, is this supposed to be a news article or a friggin’ Norman Rockwell painting with Bobby posing as Santa Claus?
What the Post and Courier conveniently omitted from its story is the flood of the special interest cash flowing into Speaker Harrell’s political action committee, which the last time we checked had about a quarter of a million dollars in it from non-picnic goers. Oh yeah, they also forgot to mention this little special interest shakedown the Harrell campaign sent to several Columbia-area lobbyist principals.
Twenty-five dollar family picnics? Whatever …

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look,
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

Fear him not, Joe; he’s not dangerous;
He is a noble South Carolinian and well given.

What means “special interest?”
Anybody who sends money to a politico is “special” and “interested.”

Will, thanks for the commentary on this! Referencing the speaker’s “leadership pac”, I recall the drama a few yrs ago surrounding the arrest of superlobbyist Jack Abramoff, who boasted strong ties to Republican heavyweights Tom DeLay, congressman Bob Ney, former C.Coalition ex dir. Ralph Reed and others with links to the Bush administration. It was reported that Abramoff bilked the Indian tribes of millions in fees and bought influence in Congress. Shortly thereafter there was talk that the Tom Delay “leadership pac” and that operation was likened to leadership pacs in the General Assembly of South Carolina and other states They say “the more one stirs crap, the more it stinks”. I’ve a feeling that if this issue was investigated thoroughly that Columbia might stink like “the paper mill in Charleston”. Real bad!!!
