Queen Jean: Don’t Fire Women’s Basketball Coach
CHIEF JUSTICE TOAL CALLING UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA TRUSTEES ON BEHALF OF SUSAN WALVIUS
FITSNews – February 20, 2008 – At least three University of South Carolina Trustees have been contacted by S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal on behalf of embattled USC Women’s Basketball Coach Susan Walvius, sources tell FITSNews.
One source – a trustee himself – said that Toal called him and William Hubbard, urging both of them to keep Walvius on as the Lady Gamecocks’ coach.
In eleven seasons, Walvius has posted a 162-156 record at South Carolina, including a 13-12 (2-8 SEC) mark this year. She was the 2002 SEC Coach of the Year when the Lady Gamecocks went 25-7 en route to the first of two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In recent years, however, Walvius’ teams have struggled, posting a 72-78 record over the past four-and-a-half seasons.
Toal and Walvius are close friends, with the Chief Justice attending most USC home games. The two have also been spotted socializing together on numerous occasions at Nightcaps, a downtown Columbia, S.C. bar.

Susan Walvius’ SEC regular-season record is something like 50-101. What an embarrassment to USC fans. The only time Walvius had a decent record was when the players on the team were recruited by the previous coach. It looks like Toal cares more about her relationship with Walvius then she does the University. Why is Walvius still a coach at USC? She should have been fired a couple of years ago. It is well worth paying her $1 Million and to ask her to PLEASE LEAVE if you really care.

How very odd. Making calls to trustees to HIRE Walvius as a coach..ok. But, making the calls so they won’t FIRE her?
SC needs a fresh face and leader. Not some other coach from a big school. They need to bring in someone who will not be getting the job (or keeping it) because of WHO they know.

Finally Walvius should be fired after the embarrassing lost to NC State. Not even Toal can save Walvius’ job now. Hopefully Walvius did not mess things up too badly, so the new coach will be able to turn things around quickly.
