MC Veggies Busts A Move
RAPPER SHOWS DJ SNACKS A THING OR TWO IN HEALTHY SC CHALLENGE VIDEO
FITSNews – February 15, 2008 – Alright … we’ll be the first to admit that this music video featuring DJ Snacks and MC Veggies is hardly the sort of hardcore rap-off that Eminem won in the movie 8 Mile. In fact, Sic Willie may or may not be making us post it because he’s trying to “curry†favor with First Lady Jenny Sanford’s super hot spokeswoman. Yeah, color us shocked on that one …
Be that as it may, though, we’re all about preventative health care here at FITSNews – as we’ve written on several occasions in the past. In our opinion, it makes good fiscal sense to spend a few nickels now as opposed to billions of dollars later, and getting kids to think about making healthier food choices is a huge part of that effort. How come? Well, studies have shown that over 25% of South Carolina children are either obese or at risk of becoming obese, which leads to all sorts of serious health problems (and staggering health care costs) down the road.
That’s why we’ve always appreciated the work the First Lady is doing with her Healthy SC Challenge, which is sponsoring this video competition as a way of drawing attention to the importance of eating right. With so many kids eating wrong – and with so many distractions competing for their attention – it’s important to realize that the traditional ways of getting messages across don’t always work. It’s also important to realize that adults generally aren’t the most effective messengers.
As Mrs. Sanford says, it’s “much more fun to learn about healthy habits from clever peers†than from grown-ups.
Mrs. Sanford’s Healthy SC Challenge sponsored the video competition as a way of building awareness among students, but the program will also end up distributing over $25,000 in cash and prizes to the winners and their schools. Basically it works like this – kids produce the videos, kids watch the videos, kids vote on the videos and kids win the prizes.
“For a first-time and quite novel-type contest I think we reached a great cross section of schools,†the First Lady told FITSNews. “What is exciting is the possibility of reaching even more students, teachers and families in the future. In addition to the number of videos created and the number of schools involved there have been literally thousands of votes cast on favorite videos and rankings. Also, we are having the winning videos put onto a DVD which we will distribute to media for public service announcements.â€
The video competition started in November of last year and was originally slated to run through the end of January, but the response from kids across the state has been so positive that the contest has been extended another month through the end of February.
Speaking of kids, we had a bit of a “meltdown†today at FITSNews world headquarters when Sic Willie tried to eat a devil’s food cupcake for lunch instead of his healthy Subway sandwich.
When Sic was told that we’d discuss the possibility of him having a cupcake later in the day, he responded by saying, “I no want to talk about cupcake, I want to eat cupcake.â€
Thank God he can’t reach the countertop, people.
