Brokeback Star Is Dead
HEATH LEDGER FOUND DEAD IN NEW YORK APARTMENT
FITSNews – January 23, 2008 – Twenty-eight year-old Australian actor Heath Ledger, who garnered international acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his role in the controversial film Brokeback Mountain, was found dead yesterday in a New York City apartment. From the Voice of America:
Authorities say a housekeeper discovered Ledger unconscious in his bedroom, with bottles of sleeping pills nearby. They say there was no indication the actor committed suicide.
Ledger will appear in the second installment of the new Batman series, The Dark Knight, later this year.
We’ve never seen Brokeback Mountain (editor’s note: except for three times last weekend …), but we’ve always thought Ledger had balls to take on a lead role in a gay cowboy love story. As he said in a 2001 interview, “a lot of people (in Hollywood) think ambition or success, and they think dollars…. My success is getting underneath that.”

My favorite Brokeback Mountain moment (and favorite Knocked Up moment) was the deleted scene from Knocked Up. Definitely worth renting the DVD to see.
It took some balls for Heath Ledger to do a gay cowboy movie, and it also took some balls for him to take a role previously played by Jack Nicholson. According to Wikipedia, Ledger locked himself in a hotel room alone for a month to prepare for the role. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Ledger’s death is certainly sad, but I can’t get over the lack of perspective demonstrated by the media here. Our country is likely on the verge of a recession and the stock market dropped three hundred points the night before Ledger’s death. It was a huge story on Foxnews and CNN in the morning, but then a celebrity dies and that’s all you hear about for two days. Are the American people really that out of touch with reality? The details of what happened Heath Ledger just aren’t as important as the problems facing our country. I know you guys report on a little bit of everything, but I am dissappointed that you chose to write about him and haven’t yet posted anything about the possibility of a recession.
