NEW HAMPSHIRE WIN CAPS McCAIN REVIVAL, CLINTON VICTORY SLOWS OBAMA’S MOMENTUM

FITSNews - January 9, 2008 - Given up for dead just six months ago, Arizona Senator John McCain pulled off an improbable political comeback last night by defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in New Hampshire’s GOP presidential primary. McCain garnered 37% of the vote compared to Romney’s 31%, with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee coming in third with 11%.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton pulled off an improbable win of her own, edging Barack Obama despite polls showing her trailing by as many as 10 points the day before the election. Clinton captured 39% of the vote, compared to 36% for Obama. John Edwards finished third with 17%.

Campaign 2008 now heads to rough and tumble South Carolina, where dirty tricks helped sink McCain’s presidential bid eight years ago. Prior to his New Hampshire win last night, polls showed McCain trailing Huckabee in South Carolina by seven percentage points (28-21%), with Romney polling third at 15%. Obama currently enjoys a double-digit lead over Clinton in South Carolina, but as the New Hampshire results showed, pollsters aren’t always right.

McCain, eager to fend off the sort of smear campaign that derailed his campaign in 2000, has established a “truth squad” in South Carolina to counter any negative attacks leveled against him.

Stay tuned … with only ten days remaining until South Carolina’s GOP voters head to the polls, anything can happen.
