Tumpy Gets Dumped From Port Board
ARCH-DEFENDER OF STATUS QUO, OPPONENT OF FREE MARKET REFORMS IS (FINALLY) SHOWN THE DOOR
FITSNews - January 8, 2008 - It sure as hell took him long enough to do it, but Gov. Mark Sanford finally removed Carroll A. “Tumpy” Campbell III from the S.C. State Ports Authority board today, a huge victory for supporters of free market expansion and a huge blow to the “total state control” forces of board Chairman Bill Stern.
Campbell, who initiated the critical 2005 vote that forbade private investment in South Carolina’s port facilities, has been a steadfast opponent of exploring public-private business models - the same models which have been used successfully by the vast majority of our competitors to expand their capacity and generate additional container traffic. As a result, South Carolina’s port system has been getting its ass kicked again and again by neighboring states in recent years, a competitive disadvantage that has resulted in the Port of Charleston slipping from fourth to seventh in the nation in terms of traffic.
Hopefully, this is a sign that Sanford is (finally) getting serious about taking advantage of one of our state’s most precious economic development assets. Â

I wonder if the campbell exit really has more to do with his ties to Terry Collier and Southern Property Management? More importantly Campbell’s work on behalf of SPM to help the Catawbas get their video poker, I mean bingo casino down on I-95 down in Orangeburg. Collier was facing some serious jail time and a pretty hefty fine.
I wonder if he dimed out his former VP of govermental ops for a better deal.

there is no such thing as a “free market.”
What you really mean is: “let’s hand over another public resources to big business.”
and that ain’t free.

When are the other bozos on the SPA board dropping out?
How can we justify spending so much dam money money on a small port terminal in Charleston when we can get one much much bigger for free down in Jasper County?
Is the Governor still out to lunch?

From The State:
“If I had to ask Mark Sanford a question, it would be, ‘Is there not an ounce of loyalty in your body?’†Campbell said. “I’d venture to say my father helped deliver Mark Sanford the governor’s office. I’m pretty offended by this.â€
This is the kind of nonsense that has held this state back for so long. No talk about what Campbell has done during his tenure…just “I should be here because of who my daddy was”.
I’m not a huge Sanford fan…but I must admit I like him pissing off the good ‘ol boy system that’s been a scourge on this state for generations.
