RELEASE OF MITCHELL REPORT SULLIES BASEBALL’S REPUTATION … AGAIN

FITSNews - December 13, 2007 - The integrity of the game of baseball took another huge hit today when former U.S Senator George Mitchell released his long-awaited report on the use of steriods among Major League ballplayers. Over 80 players were named as having used steroids, including Barry Bonds, Miguel Tejada, Jason Giambi and star pitchers Any Pettitte and Roger Clemens.

“The illegal use of performance-enhancing substances poses a serious threat to the integrity of the game,” the report said. “Widespread use by players of such substances unfairly disadvantages the honest athletes who refuse to use them and raises questions about the validity of baseball records.”

Bonds has already been indicted for lying to a grand jury about using steriods, an ongoing scandal that tainted his pursuit of baseball’s most coveted record - Hank Aaron’s all-time home run mark. Given such a heavy focus on Bonds’ sterioid use, some were still operating under the assumption that it was only a few bad apples in MLB’s bunch - an illusion that the Mitchell Report has completely shattered.

While we here at FITSNews are pleased that no player currently on the FITS Fartknockers‘ fantasy baseball roster was implicated in the Mitchell Report, the fact remains that steroid use in baseball is rampant and must be stopped. Commissioner Bud Selig has promised “I will act,” but the fact is he should have acted over a decade ago when the problem crossed the threshold from a nuisance into a full-blown epidemic. Kenesaw Mountain Landis wouldn’t have put up with this nonsense, people.
