Saban What?
ALABAMA FOOTBALL COACH COMPARES TEAM’S LOSS TO 9/11, PEARL HARBOR
FITSNews – November 20, 2007 – Since we pretty much write the book on political correctness here at FITSNews, we figured we our fans would be disappointed if we didn’t give Alabama head football coach Nick Saban a little grief for comparing the Crimson Tide’s loss to lowly Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And Pearl Harbor. From the CNNSI story, Saban says:
Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event. It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, or whatever, and that was a catastrophic event.
Maybe it’s just us, but we think it’s the “sort of” and “or whatever” parts of this quote that make it so damn good. Seriously, when you’re choosing to invoke two of the worst tragedies in American history just because your super-famous college football team got beat by a bunch of high school rejects, it’s always a good idea to sprinkle in as much Valley girl talk as possible. It kind of humanizes the references.
In Saban’s favor, he did beat Vanderbilt this year, which is more than some coaches can say.

In fairness, Saban lost to UAB in Baton Rouge in his first year at LSU.
And, Bama took Tennessee to the woodshed last month, so that means, by way of the transitive property, that UL-Monroe is better than Tennessee. And, if we invoke transititve football herpes, then there’s a solid chance that the Vols will lose to Kentucky and save us all the hell of watching Phil Fulmer stuffing down burgers at the Varsity before the conference title game.
