Huckles Is Doing Pretty Good October 30, 2007

FITSNews - October 30, 2007 - We “heart Huckabee” here at FITSNews. We also “like Mike.” In fact, ever since we interviewed the former Arkansas governor with those two names earlier this year, it’s been all the FITS gals could do not to become complete and total groupies of the former bass player/ Baptist preacher. Maybe this post has something to do with it? Who knows …
Anyway, while we’ve stopped short of overtly gushing over Huckles due to some legitimate concerns about his fiscal record, the same cannot be said for the Des Moines Register, which showed him some serious love in this morning’s paper. It wasn’t quite as shameless as our local rag La Socialista fawning all over the State Superintendent of Education or anything, but it did make us blush just a little bit.
In fact, the Iowa publication thinks Huckles has a chance to win that state’s January caucus, despite the mountain of money spent there by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Rock on, Huck. Rock on …
S.C. Leads The Nation In “Dropout Factories”

FITSNews - October 30, 2007 - When it comes to sending our kids’ futures “up in smoke,” no state is doing a better job than South Carolina. According to a new report released yesterday, South Carolina leads the nation in its percentage of “Dropout Factories,” or high schools that graduate less than 60% of their incoming freshmen. Of course, this news shouldn’t be all that surprising considering our state has the lowest graduation rate in the entire country and ranks 49th nationally in both SAT and ACT scores.
There is good news, though, as the ranking did provide S.C. Department of Education spokesman Jim Foster with yet another opportunity to make our state proud in the Washington Post:
“Part of the problem we’ve had here is we live in a state that culturally and traditionally has not valued a high school education,” Foster said.
Wow. If that isn’t selling the greatness of South Carolina, we don’t know what is. (more…)
Hatin’ On Hill October 29, 2007

FITSNews - October 29, 2007 - It seems no matter where you turn this week, somebody’s hatin’ on Hillary Clinton. Whether it’s Barack Obama and John Edwards taking her to task on Social Security, or former GOP frontrunner John McCain popping her for supporting a taxpayer-funded Woodstock Museum, the bulls-eye on Mrs. Clinton’s back is starting to take some serious arrows lately.
McCain’s South Carolina staff is even including the tagline “the only conservative who can beat Hillary Clinton” on all of its outgoing campaign e-mails.
So what gives? Why’s everybody hatin’ on Hill all of a sudden?
Well, for Clinton’s Democratic rivals, it’s all about cutting into Hillary’s ridonkulously large lead in the polls. Both Obama and Edwards pledged to run clean, “different” campaigns focusing on what they would do as President (as opposed to what anybody else would or wouldn’t do), but it’s clear the Clinton juggernaut has forced them to alter, if not completely abandon, that strategy. For McCain, it’s all about using anti-Clinton rhetoric to climb back into the top tier of an increasingly competitive (and caustic) GOP primary field. (more…)

FITSNews - October 29, 2007 - We’ve always thought that Justin Timberlake was a no-talent wigger, but for some reason millions of women (including a lot of famous ones) worship the ground he walks on. They even think he’s some sort of Oscar-worthy actor after his appearance in the movie Alpha Dog, in which he basically says “yo,” “word,” and “dawg” a lot.
Anyway, if the picture above is to be believed, Timberlake’s key to success with the A-list kitty may be that he has somehow managed to avoid the dreaded “Boy Band No Penis Curse.”
Either that or there was a tube sock sale in Beverly Hills nobody told us about. So … who’s up for doing a little digging on this story?

FITSNews - October 29, 2007 - The evolution of GOP Rep. Joan Brady on the school choice issue reminds us a lot of that song by the Steve Miller Band, “Take the Money and Run.”
Back in 2004, Brady defeated school choice opponent Susan Brill in a state House primary race thanks in large part to thousands of dollars from All Children Matter, a pro-school choice group based in Michigan.
Since her election, however, Brady has become one of a handful of Republicans to join with Democrats in consistently opposing school choice.
Last week, FITSNews learned that Rep. Brady’s daughter, Emily Brady, has accepted a position with Columbia-based Chernoff-Newman, the left-leaning public relations firm that has led the anti-school choice communications effort in South Carolina under the revolving-mantras “Beware the Wolf” and “Choose Children First.”

Tragedy Strikes South Carolina College Students October 28, 2007

FITSNews - October 28, 2007 - Six University of South Carolina students and one Clemson University student were killed when an early-morning fire consumed a waterfront vacation home in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., this morning. Six more students from USC were injured in the blaze, but all of them have thankfully been treated and released from an area hospital. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. From news reports:
The fire struck sometime before 7 a.m. and burned completely through the first and second floors, leaving only part of the frame standing. The waterfront home — named “Changing Channels” — was built on stilts, forcing firefighters to climb a ladder onto the house’s deck to reach the first living floor.
This is the second time this year that a fire claiming multiple lives has affected the Palmetto State. In June, nine Charleston firefighters perished when the roof of a burning furniture warehouse collapsed on them while they were inside fighting the blaze.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of today’s victims, as well as to the University of South Carolina and Clemson families.

FITSNews - October 28, 2007 - The defending Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts rolled to 7-0 this afternoon, thumping the Carolina Panthers 31-7 and doing their part to set up a “Battle of the Undefeateds” next week against pretty boy QB Tom Brady and the New England Patriots at the RCA dome.
After giving up a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, the Colts defense “collectively stiffened” the rest of the way while its offense exploded for 31 unanswered points, not bad considering Indy was playing without its star wide receiver Marvin Harrison and starting left tackle Tony Ugoh.
Perhaps most satisfying, the Colts victory was their first in four tries against Carolina, meaning the overall-wearing, F-150-driving, redneck inbreds who follow Panther football can no longer say “ya’ll t’ain’t never beat ‘nus” to Sic Willie and his fellow Colt fans.
