AFTER AMAZING COMEBACK, GAMECOCKS FALL TO TENNESSEE IN OVERTIME

FITSNews - October 27, 2007 - It should’ve been a comeback for the ages. It ended up being the second heartwrenching overtime loss suffered by the Gamecocks in their last three visits to Knoxville. After falling behind 21-0 at halftime, South Carolina’s offense rolled up nearly 400 second-half yards (and 24 unanswered points) to take a three-point lead with less than two minutes left in the game.

But in typical Carolina fashion, they failed to complete what should have been the greatest comeback in school history, allowing Tennessee a late drive to tie the game 24-24 before eventually falling 27-24 in overtime. Tennessee even did its best to hand the game to Carolina at the end, fumbling on its final drive (but recovering) and missing its first attempt at a game-tying field goal (but getting a second chance when one of its offensive lineman was penalized for a false-start).

The agonizing loss drops South Carolina to 6-3 (3-3 SEC) on the season, with difficult games remaining on the road at Arkansas and then at home against Florida and Clemson. It will also likely drop the Gamecocks out of the national rankings for the first time in seven weeks.

In three decades of following South Carolina football, it’s hard to remember a defeat that hurt this bad … let’s just hope it doesn’t completely take the air out of a resurgent offense (led by backup QB Blake Mitchell) and a defense that continues to excel as one of the nation’s stingiest units.
