There is Mormon Mitt Romney, who is indeed a believer, but certainly not of the "old time religion" variety. There is twice-divorced Catholic Rudy Guiliani. (Didn't Bob Jones once refer to Catholicism as a 'Cult" What must he think of the Latter Day Saints?) There is Episcopalian, but recently announced Baptist John McCain, not known for the fervor of his faith. And finally there is Fred Thompson, who candidly admitted that he did not attend church at all, save for the occasions when he visited family in Tennessee. So i guess you are right when you say that they must emulate Ronald Reagan. Reagan seldom darkened the door of a church (perhaps Nancy's belief in astrology filled the void) but was able to carry the Religious Right in 1980 over probably the most devout Christian that ever occupied the White House, Jimmy Carter.
