Of the 37.4% of South Carolinians under 65 who lack health insurance, I am sure a large percentage of them qualify for Medicaid. I would also assume that there are many who are smokers. Why then, can't our state legislature supported by our governor increase the state's cigarette tax from the lowest in the nation to at least the national average.? This would do two things: it would make available millions of dollars which could be funneled into the Medicaid program (which the Federal Gov't would match three to one) and the increased price of cigarettes would certainly decrease the number of smokers. The result would certainly help., directly and indirectly, those uninsured South Carolinians. Or is this simple logic beyond the ability of our elected officials to grasp?

Compared to the rest of SC's statistics, we should be happy to be in 11th place. I mean, we beat literate states like California and Florida as well as fellow statistical nightmares Mississippi and Louisiana.

Speaking of rankings, did anyone else noticed that SC and Clemson football are tied in the USA today poll at 14th (with 595 points each)? It's too bad we'll have to wait for the end of the season to see who's really the 14th best team in the nation.
