GAMECOCKS PROBABLY RANKED HIGHER THAN THEY DESERVE
FITSNews – September 17, 2007 – Don’t get us wrong, we bleed garnet and black just as profusely as the next diehard University of South Carolina fan. We’ve been rooting for the Gamecocks since we were in our mothers’ wombs, people, and whether it was George Rogers’ Heisman Trophy season in 1980, the 10-2 “Fire Ants” of 1984 or the back-to-back Outback Bowl wins in 2001 & 2002, we’ve lived and died by South Carolina football for the last three decades.
Having said that, seeing our beloved Gamecocks ranked No. 12 in this week’s Associated Press poll surprised us.
How come? Well, South Carolina just isn’t that good. Top 25, sure. But Top 15? Not a chance. The Gamecocks have no passing game, and our only big victory of the season (last week’s road triumph over Georgia) came against a program that’s nowhere near as good as it has been in years past. We remain cautiously optimistic that our boys can avoid a blowout Saturday against No. 2 LSU (which is clearly the best team in college football this year), but to do so they’ll have to play a helluva lot better than they’ve been playing.
UDPATE – We couldn’t help but notice six SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25 this week, compared to three ACC teams … once again proving our theory.

And I thought you knew you’re sports, this you obviously just don’t get so let me help you out… Spurrier is in no way going to show his cards in these first of three games, is going to minimize injuries and is not going give any reason for LSU to take us seriously. In short he does want them to play with low expectations.
Additionally we have met or exceeded all the professional benchmarks for each game expected of us, e.g. we have per the professional commentators the undisputed best running back duo in the nation per just about everyone. Having said that LSU will be the defining game of our season, not the be-all end-all just the toughest without doubt.

LSU may well have us meet our match, but what are the pollsters to do? Consider, I think 12th migh be high also, but we were a pretty legit number 17 after beating 11th ranked Ga. and then this past weekend after we won, teams ranked, I believe 15th, 16th, 11th and 9th all lost, so what else could they do but move us on up?

Yeah my father-in-law and I noticed the same but we moved 5 spots not the four that other ranked teams had lost to unranked teams. Where is the formula to their method of madness located? Should we lose only slightly to LSU do we get dropped or stay where were at or get dropped?

Well at least we drop out of the rankings when LSU hands us an ass-kicking this weekend. If we can just score on them once or twice, that will be a moral victory.
And I don’t think this game necessarily defines us this year. If we lose to LSU but then manage to run the table the rest of the season, we’re looking at a title shot, not that I’m holding my breath that we’ll run the table.

Carolina’s defense is ok, and its running game is pretty good. Passing sucks.
I agree LSU is the best team in College Football. Gamecocks will get their ASS handed to them this weekend.
Carolina is no way a top 15 team. Maybe top 25. Probably around 18-22.
I hate Carolina! But Spurrier is a football dynamo. He could coach most high school teams to beat LA Tech, and SC State.
My Tigers are better. They have a balanced offense and a terrific defense. Although, they haven’t been really tested by a really good team. That will come in two weeks against GA Tech.
I see us coming to Crack Town and beating the Gamecocks by two touchdowns. Carolina finishes with a mid-tier bowl game.

The LSU game is eerily similar to the 2000 Bowden bowl in Tallahassee. Clemson was overrated at #10, Fla. St. may have been underrated at #4. The result… a country-fried ass whoopin by the Criminoles 54-7.
