FEC Stirrings?
HOTTER WATER COULD BE AHEAD FOR S.C. POLITICAL CONSULTANT
FITSNews – September 13, 2007 – With a preponderance of evidence now linking Mitt Romney’s South Carolina campaign to the creation of an anonymous website attacking GOP presidential rival Fred Thompson, sources tell FITSNews that the next step in this ongoing S.C. soap opera could be a formal investigation by the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
The FEC specifically forbids the coordination of campaign activities with anonymous, third party attacks – in other words, it outlaws precisely the kind of coordination that Romney’s lead Southern consultant Warren Tompkins and S.C. campaign manager Terry Sullivan likely engaged in and are now attempting to cover up.
The only question now is where the suit will come from? Will Thompson himself call for an investigation (which would likely be supported by John McCain, a previous victim of the Tompkins smear machine)? Or will it come from another 2008 campaign, a state candidate or a third party? We’ve heard a number of different rumors on that front, but it’s probably a safe bet to say that the clear linkages between Tompkins’ firm and the attack on Thompson will result in some kind of formal inquiry.
