FITSNews Exclusive - The Scapegoat?
DONEHOE REPORTEDLY DUMPED BY ROMNEY CAMPAIGN
FITSNews - September 11, 2007 - Sources are telling FITSNews that Mitt Romney’s South Carolina campaign organization has fired consultant Wesley Donehue in an effort to make him the scapegoat for yesterday’s PR disaster. Donehue has been publicly fingered by the Romney campaign as the individual responsible for creating PhoneyFred.org, a website attacking recently-announced presidential candidate Fred Thompson. Our sources tell us Romney’s $12,000-a-month lead consultant J. Warren Tompkins and S.C. Campaign Manager Terry Sullivan are telling people they had no idea Donehue was behind the website. According to the latest AP story out of Boston:
“Once we received inquiries about the site, we discovered it was created by an individual who works at an Internet firm who parked the site temporarily on the company server space of a firm whose financial partner is a consultant to the campaign — Mr. Tompkins,” said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden, who later identified the individual as Donehue. “Mr. Tompkins did not know about the development of the site.”
Uh-huh. Romney’s spokesman also says Donehue is “not an employee of ours,” yet Donehue’s “On The Mark” direct mail firm received $81,225.02 from the Romney campaign during the second quarter of 2007, according to Federal Election Commission filings.
Incidentally, Time Magazine’s political blog, aptly-titled The Swampland, has an interesting piece this afternoon detailing Tompkins’ shady past. The post even links to a story we wrote on the old FITS last year about the consultant’s declining influence in Palmetto politics.
UPDATE - If there was any doubt as to the inter-connectivity of Donehue’s “On The Mark” direct mail firm and the “Under The Power Lines” netroots firm (which created the anti-Thompson site), both are prominently featured on Tompkins and Sullivan’s corporate website. Or at least they were prominently featured before the website was taken down earlier today. Don’t worry, we saved it for you here.

Yeah, I’ll bet Tompkins didn’t know about it. Anyone remember 2000?

This skeleton will have a hard time fitting into Wesley Donehue’s already-filled closet…

Assault and battery, stalking and now election fraud? What a class act Romney found in Wes Donahue. Good thing they canned him before their poll numbers were in the single digits. Oops, too late for that!

I mean can you be surprised about this whole negative website thing. Romeny and his cronies have been launching websites that are negative towards other candidates for some time, i.e. A daily shit with that jackass who thinks he is someone Tim Cameron. Just another negative website from a failing candidate

I wouldn’t piss off Wes Donahue. He gets down “Goose Creek style.” You don’t want to mess with that.

I was told by friends that Anne Badgley and the Campsens are now supporting Thompson. Anne was seen standing next to Thompson in Columbia.
I wonder if Romney will demand an apology from Thompson for the Cyndi Campsen Mosteller attack dog stuff now that she has deserted Senator McCain and joined Thompson.

What is “Goose Creek” style?

“Goose Creek Style?” What is that? I suppose it’s a secret martial arts incorporating trailers, meth, mullets, jorts and white trash.

Stratford, sometimes, the truth is scary indeed … how about keep that kind of stuff to yourself. Next thing we know, you’ll start talking about livestock and relatives … and that, along with Spears news, is just not what we can handle for breakfast.

as a neutral observer, taking the 30k foot view, i think that the problem is south carolina politics as a whole. the US should auction your state off and buy something productive.

true, you might be onto something there.

all the shit that goes on in Columbia is because of the lazy ass buch at the State Newspaper.
Cindy Ross Scoppe is the &#)@& lame brain I have ever read…and she rules the place.
