State control of ports, Santee Cooper, and other things can be traced back to the control the plantation owners had over their "chattel." The War of Nawthen Agression eliminated the plantation system and slavery, but them's thats gots is still them's thats gets. Now the plantation owners are known as House and Senate members , constitutional office holders, and bureaucrats. They rule over the state like plantation owners. Free market commerce from the Nawth was a threat to the plantation owners just as the free market today is a threat to the power hungry state elected officials and bureaucrats. Get used to it. It hasn't changed in 150+ years. What makes you think it will change now?
