He is lucky to be in congress...and ought to stay there.

Gresham is a wimp. Play hardball with him and you can blow him away. He is afraid of his own shadow.

The Speaker has inherited a republican party headed by a Libertarian Governor, and run by a SC GOP chairman that spends his time chasing TV cameras and personal fame. All things considered, the Speaker has done a good job of just holding the place together.
If we could throw out the blinding hub-bub of the presidential campaign and debates, everyone would see that Sanford/Dawson have allowed the party to descend to the depths of crassness enjoyed by those GOPers in DC. The masses will not realize it until after the next election. But that does not make it untrue.
The southern, conservative, spiritual, party of SC is dead. We now have an intensely commercial, secular, moderate and opportunist party. And the “new boy” network running it could care less about us.

except for that pesky word in front of Harrell's name, "Speaker," I might agree with you. doesn't a strong speaker (and strong leader) keep his party in line?

Baked....

He sure was in the majority before the spending like drunken sailors and ethical scandals cost his "compatriots" the majority. To hold Harrell responsible for republican lapses in SC is no different than someone holding Barrett responsible for those lapses in Congress. That was all I was saying.

Baked....

Point well taken, but by the same token, as a Conservative Bobby isn't in a majority of the State House, either. Speaker, yes. "Majority" leader, not a chance.

Mr Business.....

Last time I checked, Barrett isn't in the majority of the US Congress. So to lump him in with "his compatriots" isn't exactly a fair argument.

Gresham Barrett as Governor?! That's all this state needs is another eight years of a right-wing ideologue whose mind only revolves around the twin issues of cutting the size of government and reducing taxes. If you want to see how effective a man will be as governor, look at how effective he was as a Congressman . (cf Sanford) Remember that Washington poll last year that had Barrett and Joe Wilson among the 20 least effective U. S. Congressmen? Then compare the esteem with which Carroll Campbell was held as Congressman and his record as Governor.
