VICK’S INDICTMENT ON DOGFIGHTING CHARGES ROCKS NFL

FITSNews – July 18, 2007 - We’ve always liked Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick. Not only is he a joy to watch on the football field, he’s never been afraid to speak his mind and ruffle the feathers of Falcons’ ownership when it came to defending what he felt was in the best interest of his teammates.

That’s why Vick’s indictment on federal dogfighting charges is such a huge disappointment. Being linked to such a despicably savage and cruelly inhumane operation is a tremendous blow for both Vick and the NFL, which is already struggling with its reputation in the wake of the Adam “Pac Man” Jones controversy.

Fortunately, South Carolina’s animal fighting laws were strengthened recently thanks in large part to the hard work of S.C. Rep. Murrell Smith, who was one of only 38 legislators in the nation to be honored by the National Humane Society for his efforts. You know, we’d like to think our society has evolved beyond this sort of bottom-feeding “entertainment,” but Vick’s case is a sad reminder of the need for constant vigilance when it comes to dealing with such gruesome behavior.
