John Edwards Looks Like Alfalfa, Thinks You’re Stupid
CANDIDATE QUESTIONS AMERICA’S ATTENTION SPAN
FITSNews – July 18, 2007 – Since we desperately needed a nap today, we decided to read yesterday’s Washington Post story on John Edwards’ flagging presidential candidacy. Sure enough, it worked like an Ambien. We fell asleep halfway through the article – right about the time Edwards started yapping about retracing the steps of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy on his upcoming “2007 Poor Tour.” Fortunately, though, we woke up in time to read the last line of the article, in which Edwards basically accused the entire country of being stupid:
“When you ask eight people standing on a stage what would you do in Iraq and you give them either 30 or 60 seconds to answer, there is no way that any normal person watching that debate is going to be able to keep in their heads the differences or understand in any depth what the differences are and what we believe,” Edwards said.
Unless they’re hopelessly ADD like Sic Willie we think that most Americans can probably pay attention for 4-8 minutes – especially when it’s different people talking. It’s probably even easier to do in the Democratic debates because instead of a bunch of boring white guys wearing red and blue ties standing on stage there’s a woman, an African-American and a Hispanic. Also, the last time we checked all the Democrats pretty much wanted to end the war anyway, which is probably a concept we can get our feeble brains around without too much trouble.

What is Ambien? Is that some kind of a drug? Are us using Ambien now? You do need your rest to cope with all of the stress in your life.

Edwards has a point. To paraphrase H. L. Mencken, “a man man never went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. ”
How else would you explain the election of Bush and Sanford not once, but twice?

That would explain a lot of things.

Anybody who has every done GOTV in their life knows that the American public – or at least, South Carolina voters – are not all that intelligent.

Your’e misinterpreting Edward’s comment (which leads me to believe that your not ADD…just glib). Obviously, he’s saying Americans deserve a better, in-depth look at what candidates think, not confirmation of what viewers may already believe or not believe. And while your optimism about American intelligence is laudible, I wonder how honest we are with ourselves about our leaders.
