Huckabee Hunting

HUNTER, BASS PLAYER, FORMER SOUTHERN BAPTIST PREACHER COULD STIR PALMETTO STATE’S POLITICAL POT

FITSNews – February 12, 2007 – He didn’t bring a black Labrador retriever with him to his exclusive SC Hotline interview this morning with Sic Willie, but former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee might as well have.

Seriously, if “salt of the earth” is wrong, Huckabee doesn’t wanna be right.

We wrote awhile back of our appreciation for this distinctly non-political politician, and Huckabee did nothing to diminish that perception during his visit to the FITSNews booth today en route to collecting a big name endorsement he hopes will get the ball rolling on his recently announced bid for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“This guy is something special,” said Mike Campbell, who joined his mother Iris, widow of the late Gov. Carroll Campbell, Jr., in endorsing Huckabee.

“He’s not trying to reinvent himself to run for president,” Campbell said. “He’s a true conservative, with a true conservative record.”

True that. No flip-flops here.

Simply put, Huckabee is as pure, unadulterated “what you see is what you get” as any politician we’ve seen, whether he’s matching wits with the Tim Russerts of the world on the Sunday morning talk shows or the Jon Stewarts and Stephen Colberts of the late night comedy shows.

“People ultimately look for authenticity,” Huckabee told FITSNews. “They want to know that there’s something there other than a very carefully consultant-programmed, sort of mass of flesh that goes about like a robot, spouting out what he’s been told. That’s why I like to do things that are unconventional, like the Colbert show or the Daily Show.”

Huckabee delved extensively into his views on tax policy, budgeting, health care and social security during our chat, but it was his take on a 2008 GOP field that feautres heavyweights like Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney that caught our attention.

“Right now the whole process has been about celebrity, not about substance,” Huckabee told us. “It’s all driven by how much money have you raised, not what kind of ideas you have raised. As that begins to change, and it’s going to change, People are going to start saying ‘Now when was it that you just came to this view of being pro-life?’ ‘How long has it been since you’ve really been for the Second Amendment?’ And Republican voters aren’t stupid. They’re going to start asking these questions and they’re not going to want to know what are you saying today, they’re going to want to know what you’ve been saying through your career, and not just what have you been saying, what have you been doing?”

“When our records reflect our rhetoric, then I think things are going to change pretty dramatically.”

It is impossible to believe that the Huckabee team could not find someone more qualified for an endorsement than Michael Campbell.

But then I remember, the Columbia Police horse died last week. At least the horse finished his schooling…something the Huckabee team should have looked into before asking Campbell to sign his “X” on the dotted line.

I always like Huckabee, but trotting out the dwarf as a prime example of considered judgment is not good. In true Mike Campbell fashion, if Huckabee loses, Campbell will vote for Obama…

Neigh, I say, neigh ….
