But if you start with his statue, where do you stop? Do you leave Strom Thurmond, who while obviously very tolerant of African-Americans privately, hardly allowed those feelings to impede his political career, if you look at his public statements over the years.(his father, by the way, was Tillman's pwersonal attorney and campaign manager, and shot a man dead on the streets of Edgefield for insulting Tillman. Or James F. Byrnes--hardly a champion of racial equality, or J. Marion Sims, who exploited black women shamelessly in his pursuit of medical knowledge. Wade Hampton was a slaveowner and contributed not only his military talents, but huge amounts of money to the Confederacy, although after the war he was more tolerant than most towards the freedman. (and an enemy of Tillman.) The point is, as Shelby Foote, so succinctly put in, ""you can't hide from your history." You will find a blemish in every man. Don't forget that although Carroll Campbell, who did much for this state as governor, no doubt was guilty of Anti-Semitism in his political tactics when he defeated Max Heller for Congress back in the 1970's and his racial stands(he was against removing the CSA flag from atop the State House) left much to be desired. There is a proposal to erect his statue on the State House grounds. So, "let those of you who are without sin, cast the first stone." Interesting point about Tillman. Also, there is a monument on Senate and Sumter right across from the State House for the first editor of The State newspaper who was murdered in cold blood by Tillman's brother.
